It’s been several months, but I remember the fried chicken and the blistered green beans being good. I felt the Hainan chicken rice was decent but you can get the same dish for similar quality and a lower price at lots of places around SF now.
As for the Yelp reviews, I suspect that they are in a minefield:
-They’re serving Asian food from a relatively obscure cuisine in a trendy, mostly non-Asian neighborhood–>some non-Asian diners will find the food outside their comfort zone (too spicy, too bland, etc. etc. etc.)
-They are serving Asian food to a mostly non-Asian clientele–>some seasoned Asian diners think the food is insufficiently authentic
-They are serving Asian bar food in a very high-rent neighborhood–>everyone is miffed at the prices and portions, and some seasoned Asian diners think the place is a poor value compared to what they could get elsewhere
Couple all that with the usual Yelp nonsense and you have a perfect storm dragging down the average.
