RT Bistro [San Francisco, Hayes Valley]

I had a late dinner this past weekend at RT Bistro, the new restaurant from Evan and Sarah Rich of Rich Table and RT Rotisserie. The chef de cuisine at RT Bistro is chef Bill Wang. It’s just around the corner from Rich Table.

Menus

THE BEES TEAS ($17)
YUZU CINNAMON VERJUS ROOIBOS CHAI LEMON
To drink, I had a mocktail - the Bee’s Teas. It was refreshing and citrusy with a little tannic tea flavor.

NBD ($18)
CHERRY LEAF INFUSED BOURBON, VERMOUTH ROUGE, SAKURA BITTERS
And later on a NBD, which was like a cherry flavored Manhattan.

OYSTERS ON THE ½ ($4.50 each)
PURPLE SHISO MIGNONETTE
The oysters were good - very similar to the ones at Rich Table. They were nicely shucked and sauced in a vinegary mignonette and had some shiso leaf which added a little anise like flavor.

BAY SHRIMP LOUIE ($16)
PURPLE DAIKON RED ENDIVE
SHIRO VINAIGRETTE
I also had the shrimp Louie, which was very good. There were little bay shrimp in a dressing that may have had some miso in it? The shrimp were topped with a crunchy slaw, and there were little crisp bitter endive leaves on the side which were nice platforms for the shrimp salad.

KANPACHI CRUDO ($21)
TAIWANESE 5 FLAVOR SAUCE
MANDARIN
The kanpachi crudo was also very good. There were fresh slices of kanpachi with a spicy sweet chili sauce and pieces of mandarin orange.

S.F. DUCK L’ORANGE ($49)
MANDARIN SWEET N SOUR CHICORY ORANGE HONEY KOSHIHIKARI RICE
For a main I had the duck, which was great! This had a duck leg and a wing, prepared a bit like a duck confit. The duck was very tender and falling off the bone, with a skin that was a little crispy. The orange sauce around the duck was sweet and sour and a little herbal, kind of tasted like Sichuan peppercorn but without the numbing. There were pieces of orange and chicory leaves around the duck. It came with a side of a very nice rice in clay pot, which had some crispy bits on the bottom and was covered with some more chicory.

ICE BOX PIE ($15)
MEYER LEMON. GRAHAM CRACKER CRUMBLE CHANTILLY CREAM
For dessert I had the ice box pie and a small coffee ($5). The pie was kind of like a lemon mousse with a graham cracker crumble and whipped cream on top. It was very nice and light and creamy with some crunch from the topping. The lemon filling was not too tart and not too sweet.

And there was also a signature Rich Table honey wafer as a mignardise. This one was covered in chocolate.

This was a very enjoyable dinner. I’ll be back to try the burger.
