RIP Chowhound

I would totally do a nostalgia thread of favorite recipes - when I was teaching myself to cook, I remember working my way through will Owens’ pork shoulder recipe, or jfood’s short ribs and countless others before I found my own style and learned! (Edit: to be clear, I still make those)

I’ve plugged it. I also bumped a dozen of my favourite old threads.

I do hope we get many of the regulars from CH. There are so many good folks who have been part of that community for a long time.

HO solves so many of the frustrating technical problems that thwarted both posting and interacting there. I think they’d love it here and make this community the richer for it.

Please, invite them over!

I did already on some of the regular threads (weekly menu planning, baking, cookbook of the month)

Relax nobody is in trouble!! I just wanted to draw as much attention from everyone as possible. Above @sck has made a plea to try and attract as many Chowhound’s as possible…

I would like to reiterate that plea as well as those who can still post there to let people know there is an alternative. We might not be perfect but we are trying each day to make this as valuable a resource as possible, without much of the craziness Chow brought with it.

Thank you for your continued support.

Let’s Go HO’s!!!

If ever there was a call to arms, it’s that.

Not surprised CH is shutting down. I remember when they rolled CH into the magazine Chow, and then CBS media bought it. I went to marketing survey meeting at the CH/Chow HQ with two objectives, get the $100 gift card but also check out the location/culture because they were hiring. The staff seemed nice enough but I did not pursue the job, not right for me. At that time I couldn’t figure out how they got revenues (food website became very competitive), and then they reconfigured the site…so stopped going. HO is good however…low key, friendly, people informative. The one thing I hope is people from CH come over, but I hope a few people don’t dominate things like in the past.

One thing Chowhound users can do is to mention in their favorite discussions or boards about HO, and entice the friends over, as e.g. @Phoenikia and @Saregama have done with much effectiveness. Thanks both!

One of the best areas of CH, right up to the present, has been the Paris board. Several of us have posted on threads there & suggested that the regular posters migrate over here, since there’s already a pretty solid overlap. Let’s see what happens.

What I meant was we might see a mini influx of new members. Ones who don’t know about HO yet, ones who joined that wretched site after we had fled.

There’s a bunch of “old-timers” on here from the beginning but they have either left for whatever reasons or are (still) lurking.

Annoying people are everywhere,(especially online because they can be PC police/a-holes anonymously). This site is small so they stand out like like a siren in the night.

A request for all here — I know the shutdown of CH may bring up many old wounds and negative feelings, but if people want to vent, can you please restrict it to previous CH venting threads.

We are hoping/trying to get regular CH posters to join us here to recreate/rebuild, and enrich our discussions and community.

A pool of swirling negativity is not the welcome anyone wants or needs.

Whatever your past feelings on the posters — it’s in the past tense — everyone should get a clean slate when they join HO, and a sense of the positive community we enjoy here!

I vote with Saregama for a clean slate.

I gather we’ve had a goodly number of new recruits since yesterday. Let’s be our usual welcoming, friendly selves.

It was. And, if memory serves, they later included it or me as one of the Top 50 threads or posters. Goodness knows how they came to whichever decision it was.

Actually, there are a few knowledgeable core posters in the French board, many others are travelers asking for help, so they will follow the flow. It will be great to see if they are interested to join HO.

I agree.

Also, let bygones be bygones.

I know I can be pedantic. Most of us can be pedantic. It’s because we’re interested enough in food, restaurants, alcohol, etc to spend time discussing it in our free time. It can be nice to share knowledge.

Here’s the thing. Most people do not like being corrected or told they’re wrong. Of course, most of us know this from CH. Don’t yuck someone else’s yum.

Most of us are a little burnt out right now, after the past 2 years, which makes me, at least, a little more irritable.

I come to HO and the Internet in general, to figure out how what’s for dinner and where to eat, but also to plan trips, escape, procrastinate and connect with others.

Let go of old grudges. Let old posters have a new start. Ignore the posters who annoy you. Try to keep the snark to a minimum, and use SaRCAsm tyPE or :joy::thinking::tired_face: emojis to let people know when you’re joking or being sarcastic. Back away from fights. Soften your language though the edit function. This post is becoming a little too pedantic.

Do what you want, be the kind of poster you want to be.

Enjoy HO.

I hadnt realised until very recently that the system does have that most useful facility to actually block someone so you don’t see their posts (unless they are quoted by someone else). From experience on another (non food) forum, it can be really helpful in dealing with the rare occasion when someone consistently irritates the crap out of you. Use it sparingly.

As an aside, it makes me wonder how many HOs will not read this post because they’ve “ignored” me. :grinning:
