Rice Roll Express [San Francisco, Chinatown]

I was walking to North Beach today from the Chinatown Muni station on Stockton Street and stopped at Rice Roll Express for a snack. Rice Roll Express opened in June and specializes in steamed rice rolls / cheung fun. I found an article about it on the SF Examiner:

Menu:

I had the #1 Rice Roll Special, which has beef, pork, BBQ pork, and egg, for $9.21. You also have the choice of one free vegetable to add, and I added scallion. You order at the counter and get a number. They only accept cash and Venmo at the moment.

There’s a plethora of condiments available. I added sesame sauce, sweet sauce (I think hoisin), chili crisp, hot sauce, sesame seeds, and sweet soy sauce.

I also added a small order of Pork w. Preserved Egg Congee ($3.46). The rice roll was delicious. Made to order, it had a thin delicate skin, and the various fillings were also quite good. It was also a pretty big portion. The congee was fine, a bit light on the preserved egg, but for about $3.50 I’m not complaining.

Rice Roll Express has a few new menu items, including noodles and wontons:

I tried one of them, the Beef Brisket and Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup ($11.74), which was not bad. The wontons were good, as well as the brisket, which was soft and flavorful. The noodles could have been a bit more al dente to my taste though. The clear broth was pretty good. I added some chili oil to it.

I also had one of the rice rolls again, this time the Shrimp Rice Roll ($6.91), which was very good, as good as the special roll I had last time. I doctored this one up with the works.

Still Venmo or cash only!

Glad to see their business steadily trending up. Their first few weeks looked pretty grim. Word is getting out.
