Back in the Chowhound days of 2021, my first trip to Makan found excellent food but the acar and sambal were timid. Like they were afraid of offending anyone with flavor, despite an impressive list of ingredients.
My meal here yesterday was a complete wonder. I did not order any of the acar or sambal.
We had:
Biscuits with kaya, mango salad, A special of pineapple curry, rendang, and char kay teow.
As last time, the brunch-only biscuits should be in the Food Hall-of-Fame. The mango salad was good enough to drink the liquid by the spoonful (or just tip the bowl into your mouth), the smoky wok hei of the noodles was like magic. The rendang provided a rich counterpoint to the juicy pineapple.
Stepping out of the restaurant, I felt like I was floating.
