Restaurants, Bakeries, Food shops and Coffee shops in [Southwestern Ontario] [London, Ontario] [Windsor, Ontario] [Stratford, Ontario]

The pizzas looked pretty good as they were going by our table, so they may be worth trying.

Too bad. Thanks for posting about this.

Sad about Red Rabbit. We had some lovely meals there.

I was briefly back in Stratford last week and had a very nice mixed berry muffin from Honey Tree. I also stopped in again at Crowsfoot Smokehaus in Conestogo for lunch. I had the brisket again, which remains smoky and flavourful, although the lean pieces were dry. I tried the side of spatzle and cheese, which tasted very good although the spatzle were very small - more like little bits thank mini dumplings. I also tried a side of collard greens, which seemed to have more German influence with some sugar and vinegary being dominant flavours.

2 Hakka places I will try.

https://hakkayeti.ca/

I tried Paloma’s Grill for tacos.
https://palomasgrill.com/menu/

Very good arrachera and lengua tacos.

Good tres leches cake.

Guacamole is not a good version. Nopales taco was just okay. I would focus on the lengua or arrachera.

Expect the service to be slow. Nice owner.

I had takeout from Congee Chan last night. I was craving Chinese Canadian food, so I ordered sweet & sour chicken balls, honey garlic ribs, mixed veg with garlic sauce and Singapore Noodles. Everything was good. Portions are very generous.

They also have Buddha’s Feast, which I prefer to the mixed veg. The mixed veg has too many red peppers, green peppers and onions for my liking.

The takeout at Congee Chan is better than takeout from Wong’s Garden. Wong’s Garden was good 20 years ago.

My last takeout order from Wong’s Garden was not good (I’m being diplomatic- avoid the Singapore noodles and ginger beef).

London has a lot of new places with mainland dishes I haven’t tried yet.

Ravenous Taotie, Hui Lau Shan, some Hot Pot places, etc.

Amylie’s closed and has been replaced with a new Chinese restaurant.

I ordered Manchurian beef (dry), Hakka noodles, Vegetable momos and spring rolls from Hakka Chinese Kitchen. We liked it. I’ve mostly been ordering from Congee Chan over the last 2 years, but I really liked this place. First experience with Hakka food in LondonOn. This Hakka restaurant keeps halal.

Small place, but they have at least half a dozen tables in the dining area.

Update — I’m heading to Stratford for some late-season theatre, and in doing some advance research, I see that AO Pasta Shop has reopened the restaurant for lunch only, Tuesday to Friday, dine-in and takeout options available.
I am now planning breakfast at Old Man, lunch at AO, dinner at The Bruce.

I’ve only tried a Bombolone at AO pasta this year, which was good!

The Chef’s School offers dinner some nights, with reservations through Tock.

Enjoy your time in Stratford.

I visited the Slow Food Market in Stratford today, which closes at the end of Oct. There were around a dozen vendors.

Stratford has very few independent restaurants open for brunch or lunch on Sunday these days.

Bentleys, the Hub and Mercer Kitchen had their patios open today.

I planned to order takeout brunch from Old Man, to take to a picnic table at the market square. I was turned off while I was waiting to order.

I decided to get takeout from The Parlour instead. The servers were really friendly, and made me feel welcome. The Croque Madame was excellent , and Fish & Chips were pretty good. It took around 20 minutes to prepare.

I might revisit Mercer Kitchen another time. It’s been over 5 years since my last visit.

Mercer Kitchen Patio today

I picked up a lavender blueberry scone at Revel which was pretty good.

Rheo Thompson had a massive line inside, so I walked over to Chocolate Barrs. I didn’t realize how much they had expanded since the move from Ontario St. I bought a box of dark chocolate coffee creams, butter creams, salt caramels and caramel marshmallow (like Buttermallow that Laura Secord stopped making) chocolates, some fruit jellies and a pecan roll (memories of 1970s & 1980s Laura Secord offerings!)

I miss buttermallows…

Excellent goulash soup, goulash (main) and pork schnitzel from the Budapest on Dundas St tonight. I’ll be back sooner than later. The dinners included soup or salad and a dessert. First time for me to try Somloi Gusta, a trifle with vanilla custard, cake, chocolate, nuts and rum.

Los Comales is closing this month.

Fancy Tarts closed at some point this past summer.

I will start a new London, Ontario thread in the New Year.

Excellent nachos, lamb vindaloo and lamb shank from The Morrissey House.

We were in Cambridge for the past 4 years and shopped at many bakeries at least once and they were all good.

However, Cambridge has a large Portugese population and bakers who cater to them. We’re in Guelph now, but still return for excellent custard tarts, corn bread, and buns at these two establishments:

Azores Bakery http://azoresbakery.ca

Silva’s Portugese Bakery, 45 McLaren Ave, Cambridge, ON N1R 8K9

There are oa few others thers as well that we never visited

I had take-out twice this week!

Tried the octopus, scallops, salmon and tempura Brussels sprouts at ANNDining. All quite good. Maybe a little too salty for me, but tasty. Interesting flavors. Nice to be able to order their upscale food online. Some portions are precious, small for the price tag. 4 medium scallops in the scallop dish, salmon might have been 4 ounces, around 4 ounces of octopus. Generous portion of tempura Brussels sprouts, although they were a little greasy for me.

Saturday, I ordered a big feast from Yasmine’s.
Little beef sausages in a pomegranate sauce, Lebanese moussaka, their Zesty eggplant, lahmacun, kibbe, a kofta kabob, a beef shishkabob, and seasonal vegetables. Everything was good, if not excellent. I had lahmacun, a bit of kofta and beef kabob for breakfast!

Canadian prices. I have been ordering enough for 4 people, and both nights, the meal came to around $100 Cdn before tax and tip. ($104 at ANNDining and $101 at Yasmine’s)

Yasmine’s provides more bang for the buck. (I knew that!)

We ordered from Yasmine’s this past Saturday as well! It’s one of our favourites for solid takeout. We both had the chicken shawarma plate and we shared a fattoush salad.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your posts about food options here in London, ON/SWO. Looks like we have visited a lot of the same spots. I’ll try to remember to post here once in a while
