Restaurant horror stories

I love farm fresh eggs although I rarely get them because I live in the city.

I keep them in the refrigerator.

Nothing wrong with it. I get 36 at a time, so I’d rather save the fridge space for other stuff.

Had horrible eggs at a Denny’s once. Musta have been scraped off the floor.

MOST countries wouldn’t think of refrigerating eggs. Kind of a US phenom. In Ecuador they looked at me crazy when we got home from shopping and I put eggs in the fridge (old city habit.)

Doing my bit for hijacking-- well it IS a related horror story but not a BOH story. I just read it on Grub Street. The article has this intriguing headline:

Should You Still Pay For Dinner If You Were Robbed While You Ate It?

A foursome was sitting at a sidewalk table when a guy on a bike rode by & grabbed the lady’s pocketbook just as their food arrived. They unsuccessfully gave chase, went back to the restaurant where their food was now cold & the restaurant presented them with the bill. (& there was much rejoicing!..or maybe not). THEN…

Then, in a twist, the thief returned to the scene of the crime and flung the bag — emptied of its credit cards and an iPhone — back at the table before again fleeing.

Opinion breaks down into 2 camps-- Yes they do or No they don’t. While I can see the validity of “it’s not the restaurant’s fault” I think the eatery really missed the boat by not comping OR offering a free meal at a later date. (presumably one would want to rush home & cancel all the cards & phone) It would’ve been great feel-good publicity.

Many years ago, I had my wallet stolen off a bar. The bartender comped me without a second thought - I think the bill was not too much, around $40. So I’m definitely in camp 2. I got the wallet back because whoever stole it tossed it on top of a sleeping homeless guy, who found me via the phone number on my driver’s license. Once I got all new cards and such, I went back and tried to pay the restaurant, but they wouldn’t take my money. I gave it to the homeless guy, who I intended to reward anyway.

My wife had her purse stolen right off the back of her chair when she was sitting in it in the university library. It was found in a local deli’s dumpster-- still had the ID (relief!) in it. Was only like $20 cash in it which was gone ofc. This was pre- cell phone so no worry there. She’s been diligent about safe purse parking ever since.

The restaurant probably lost 4 repeat customers instead of gaining them.

Exactly. And I’d go back to that restaurant, but it closed. It was called Pasta Sotto Cinque, or something like that.

In general I agree that the restaurant should have comped the meal. But we are only hearing the story from the “victim’s” perspective. From my reading of the story I can see how the server may not have been aware of the situation when presenting the check and then the customer went off the deep end.

One of LA’s great restaurants in the ancient past, when I grew up, was Scandia. It was formal and served 'continental and Scandinavian" cuisine. This was where all important events that were not celebrated at Far East Terrace or Won-Q were celebrated at. We even had a waiter who served us every time we went. Nathan Chroman, the LA Times wine writer did the wine list. Scandia was where I first tasted great wine: a bottle of 1966 Chateau Haut Brion in the early 70s.

The feature of any meal was the Brikka tower. It was a lazy susan of 2, 3 or 4 levels, depending on how many of you were dining, filled with all sorts of things like creamy smooth pate, herring salads, etc. So when Scandia was cited for reusing uneaten food from the Brikka, did that stop us from going? Never.

Would always enjoy eating my food over restaurants food. Yeah yeah yeah, yeah hear yeah……

I think I have an idea of which place this is (no need to mention).

My “back of house” experiences were limited and not bad. Fast food and the dedication to clean handling and delivery was admirable.

I have some “back of house” stories viewed from the customer perspective. One was a Chinese takeout place in Trenton. As I was ordering, someone walked back in with food they had already purchased and (partially) eaten. The customer was unhappy and returned it.

The woman behind the counter proceeded to spoon the returned / eaten food back into the warmers where they would serve new customers - right in front of everyone!

Another time, I was out with my wife and she ordered some chicken dish that looked janky. Turns out, it was someone’s bused meal, served to my wife complete with a cigarette butt in it!!

Disgusting!!
