Red Hook, Tivoli, Rhinebeck (NY) Saturday jaunt

We headed upstate to Tivoli yesterday to see the Tom Prettys (woman fronted Tom Petty cover band) at Lasting Joy Brewery. The weather, as it has been the last billion Saturdays this spring in NY, was wet, but that didn’t dampen (sorry) the fun! The brewery is gorgeous even in the rain with an airy indoor space centered around a large circular bar and a partially covered outdoor space. There are fire pits aplenty and lots of green space to wander. They have their own food truck with a sort of random menu, but my daughter loved noshing on local radishes dipped in herb butter and the local (I think) strawberries came with a lime crema and just a hint of jalapeno- what a creative combo! The pizza chickpeas were sadly not crispy as promised, but seasoned well. There was another food truck, with Greek food, and we got a salad plate with excellent falafel on the side and nice fluffy pita. My husband had two sours that he enjoyed, and my daughter and I each had a mocktail - me a shrub and my daughter a fantastic (yes!) Shirley Temple. The band was incredible, a great only slightly soggy show under a tent adjoining the building, with almost all our favorite songs. Sadly I never got to see him in person, so this was as close as I’ll ever get to seeing him, and it was really fun.

After the show, we went to Corner Counter in Red Hook for some fancy grilled cheese. My daughter had a stellar kid’s grilled cheese with Monterey and cheddar and my husband and I shared the Figgy Piggy (ham, alpine blend cheese, and fig jam) and the Cherry Brie-ze (turkey, brie, and cherry compote) on their crusty sourdough. They were messy but delicious.

We finished up our adventure with ice cream at Del’s, which is an old fashioned type roadside stand with ice cream made from the milk from a local farm. I didn’t love the cookies and cream (not as vanilla-y as I’d like and didn’t taste like real Oreos) but the maple snickerdoodle was great and my daughter loved her strawberry unicorn sundae.

All in all a fun day upstate. It’s a beautiful area and one I haven’t explored too much. We’ll definitely be back up there again this summer.
