We finally got around to trying Afro’s. The crust is somewhat tougher and maybe a bit overcooked (possibly because they were in a warmer when I arrived to pick them up), compared with Descendant. But the toppings are really fun and tasty. We tried 6 personal size ones to sample a range of the options:
The King Bacon Double Cheeseburger: seasoned, somewhat charred ground beef, double-smoked bacon, tomatoes, pickled purple onion, pickles, burger sauce - very tasty, bacon-y, with a hint of Big Mac.
The Marley Vegetarian: mushrooms, roasted red peppers, beans (a first for any pizza I’ve had), callaloo, curried potatoes, jackfruit, green sauce aioli, and crispy jalapenos - lots of yummy Caribbean veggie sides on a pizza.
The Jackie Brown: jerk chicken, purple cabbage coleslaw with tequila-lime-coconut dressing, jackfruit, green sauce aioli, and crispy jalapeno - a few too many elements, obscuring the flavour of the jerk chicken itself.
The Hendrix Experience Chicken and Waffles: crust infused with waffle ingredients, fried chicken, toasted pecans, pressed watermelon with tequila, maple habanero, and fresh cilantro - even if the chicken was more baked than fried, this was a genius combo.
Bruce Leeroy: crispy pork, crispy pork skin, apples, scallions, pickled bird’s eye chilis, pickled garlic, apple mustard chutney - lots of tang to offset the richness.
Betty Wright: braised herb-marinated lamb, roasted plum tomatoes, charred pickled onions, raita, and micro greens - supple and very lamb-y lamb, complemented nicely by the other ingredients.
