I’m adding prices from @calam1ty ’s recent review from Indian Desire, a midrange Indian restaurant in the Annwx.
“They arrived in quite small containers perhaps 10cm diameter: A baigan bharta (15.95) and lamb korma (22.95). I can’t eat a lot of spices these days so I also ordered a raita (4.95). Two thin, flaky naan were served (5.95 each).”
Good to know about Adrak. I was going to try the Richmond Hill location next week. Now I think I’ll delay until I see more reviews because they’re not exactly cheap.
I like Biryani N BarBQ https://biryaninbarbq.com It’s one of those places that I wouldn’t have gone in because of the name but it’s up there in the better spots we’ve been to over the past year. Note they have a separate takeout section with hot tables. We did dine in instead as they had a bigger menu.
Ended up at curryish tavern.
Had the pani puri
Delhi mule
Maharaja combo
Stuffed cheese omelette with masala ordered by the dining companion
Drink was strong.
Other dishes I think might be more appreciated by some I enjoyed the lamb sausage and spice on the Maharaja combo
Priced a bit high for the brunch it is jury is out for moi for now
King Place is a longtime favourite, and they just moved a couple of blocks west, in the shadows of the Jarvis and Dundas condo towers. I haven’t been to the new location yet but plan to pick up some Chili Chicken in the near future.
It looks like you really hit on something there. “Thirteen” elevates flavour and our youth. Here you can purchase this masala and a few other spice blends for $5.99.
Is 300% markup the new grocery store normal? You would think the Witches would help the non-profit by keeping the hike small and choosing volume of sales (everybody wins including the public) over single item profit (only the Witches win).
I noticed some TO stores were marking up the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar in a big way.
I didn’t buy the Masala. It caught my eye. RPM Bakehouse had a Xmas baked good pop-up upstairs yesterday . The upstairs salon was insanely crowded. I stayed for about 45 seconds before leaving. Later, my friend who stayed let me know she found most items she bought at the Xmas Market to be mediocre.
I’ve noticed a few more South Asian restaurant chains, or restaurants with more than 2 locations lately.
Does anyone have comments about The Biryanawalla, which now has locations in London, Cambridge and Ottawa, as well as TO and North York?https://thebiryaniwalla.com/
I’m pleased to say Pickering has one fine-dining Indian restaurant. Zeera By The Bay is a mom and pop serving up traditional dishes. We haven’t dined in yet, but the delivery has been great. It’s winter. The perfect time for Indian cuisine. https://www.zeeraindiancuisine.ca/
Khazana by Chef Sanjeev. I have had a few deliveries from this spot to form a better opinion now so an update. Though from the friends I shared this food with commented that in the restaurant experience is different (maybe some dishes aren’t even offered for delivery?) I have tried the following
Butten Chicken (Not my fav but a crowd pleaser)
Chicken Tikka Masala. Decent and has a nice smokey flavor
Ruby Paneer. Went well and different from their other dishes.
Chicken Seekh Basket Decent though a small portion and one of the few grilled dishes from what I recall.
Kadhai Chicken Decent and not your usual dish.
Murg Korma. Decent as well
Now for all the dishes with salan (sauce/gravy) they are loaded with spices so will give heartburn if you are not used to this level of spices (not hot but others). Chicken portions aren’t overloaded like other places so plan accordingly.
Up north in the Richmond Hill/Markham area, my favorites are:
Bombay Bhel ( Times Square ) - Moderate price
Adrak ( on Hwy#7, next to Times Square ) - Higher end
Chauhan’s ( Woodbine and 14th ) - moderate price
Dum Pukht ( Woodbine and Denison ) - Higher end
All of the above focuses on the less spicy, Northern Style Indian Food.
The Lamb Rogan Josh and Lamb Korma I had at Bombay Bhel recently were both cooked from scratch and very flavorful. Creamy Cashews were used in the Korma sauce.
Had a planned dinner at Pukka
I liked the seafood curry and lamb lollipop.
Other items were below average especially the butter chicken having an odd sweet finish
And the Okra Fries are almost always in my order. And the Gunpowder shrimp (not pictured).
I’ve never had their Butter Chicken (or anybody else’s either - Tomato allergy)
For winelovers, be aware of their monthly (roughly) wine and food dinners which match Indian dishes with pairs (usually) of wines. They usually feature off-menu dishes.
