Really excellent bagels in the Greater Boston (MA) area

There is definitely not a Bruegger’s in West Newton. Auburndale perhaps?

Apologies , I stand corrected. In Auburndale, in the plaza with Star Market on Commonwealth.

No prob. Hope I didn’t come off as splitting hairs.

Rosenfeld’s, Rosenfeld’s, Rosenfeld’s. Go early! And they don’t freeze well. But yes, Rosenfeld’s (in Newton Center).

Absolutely!
As for freezing, I let them cool first, NOT closed in a plastic bag, to minimize condensation. I have decent luck freezing them.

Hard to believe a thread as important as this simply fizzled two years ago. Here’s a kick in the seats of your collective pants:

As for me, I Bagelsaurus from time to time, and Mamaleh’s at others. Both decent, in their own ways, and both able to stand up to New York’s somewhat mixed contemporary offerings

We recently tried Better Bagels in the Seaport. It’s a misnomer, in my opinion.

I’m curious to hear what you rank – here or anywhere – as “good?” For me Bagelsaurus is way better than decent. I don’t have bagels very often so maybe I’m totally off the mark but I had some from there a few weeks ago and thought they were excellent; great texture inside and out.

Bagelsaurus has a particular style of bagel – sourdoughy, slightly airy crumb, crackly crust – that is fine but not my overwhelming preference these days. It’s a personal thing. Mamaleh’s are closer to standard bagels (such as those I had from Russ & Daughters in NY three days ago).

Interesting! I’ve not yet tried Mamaleh’s, so I’ll have to do that soon. I did have a Russ & Daughters bagel late last year, but I was too busy concentrating on the smoked fish to think deeply about the bread part. Next time!

To offer praise where it’s due, once you accept Bagelsaurus’s interpretation of a bagel, some of their unusual types are pretty good. I can’t quite get over their plain being not quite what I think of as a bagel, but their black olive is something I do enjoy – when I can get it (not in the last few months).

Has anyone tried the just-opened Park Bagelry in Allston? Supposedly in the “Montreal-style.

Bagelsaurus are my favorite local bagels (admittedly there are many many Boston-area bagel producers that I either haven’t tried, or have not eaten in many years).

I also enjoy the products from Goldilox in Medford (living close to them and getting fresh warm bagels is a bonus!) and Exodus bagels in Rosindale. Not a fan of Iggy’s, which I think were better years ago when they were smaller. Diesel are OK but I don’t go out of way for them. I really liked Rebelle when they were in Providence but something seems to have changed when they moved to Cambridge. I haven’t tried any of the old school Newton or Brookline bagel producers in years.

We went to Kupel’s in Brookline a year ago for the first time in at least 10 years. The bagels were awful, nothing like I remember from when I lived really near them in the early 1990s. That’s why I am not excited about their rumored expansion to Elm St in Somerville.

How disappointing. Way, waayy back in the day when I lived around there, I too was a Kupel’s fan.

I was more a fan of Bagel King, which had the advantage of being open in the wee hours as well as being a short walk from my BU dorm. Were they even a block apart?

Hmmm, I do not know. Back in that day, I was making my way from Beacon Street/Brookline rather than BU. Also, one of my close pals was a Kupel’s devotee. So our destination was not up for debate. Ever.

Wait- what?? Where? Man, back when I could eat gluten and bagels I spent many an hour driving over to Brookline from Somerville for the whole wheat sesame bagels at Kupels. I know, whole wheat is not really a classic bagel, but in order to justify the nutritional side of things, my regular daily bagel needed to be whole wheat, and while many a bagelry or baker makes a whole wheat bagel, they are almost universally plain. I’ve complained about this elsewhere, although not for years, but there is a great misunderstanding about the bagel part versus the topping part, and whole wheat should not count as a variety, but rather a base. Only Kupels would put something ON the whole wheat bagels. Now, if they move right around the corner from me, that will be salt in the wound. Some would say bagel salt in the whole-wheat-bagel-shaped wound left in my heart.

For a true, health-be-damned bagel experience, I would have to say Bagelsaurus is my actual favorite, and for gluten-free, the Sunshine Everything gluten free from Mamaleh’s (not made by them but available in the freezer case) is the best by far.

Corner of Elm and Mossland in ‘early 2026’ according to the rumor going around several months ago. Haven’t heard anything recently.

Seriously. I tried this when I first started in Seaport 3 years ago, because I needed a quick lunch and it was one of the few grab and go spots. It was an extremely ordinary bagel, but I hadn’t heard any praise for this spot so just shrugged. Flabbergasted this is on a best of anything list. If I want a nice bagel, I just run to Pop Up right now and hope to grab a fresh one out of the oven.
