there are so many confusing english names like this for spices - black cumin for nigella sativa/kalonji for example. Thinking about it some more, I am not even sure the seed I am talking about is radjuni - it was more likely ajwain which I have actually cooked with. Did these samosas have ground spice or no spice at all? Now I am curious to try
Agree on confusing. But I think you’re thinking of radhuni given context, ajwain is used more in north and central India in my experience. I bought radhuni last year for the first time at a little Bangladeshi store in queens.
Re spicing — it was just potatoes, but with a meaty flavor. Think yebeg alecha. I’d guess ginger, garlic, turmeric, green chillies, and maybe a pinch of Bangladeshi style garam masala.
Do you plan to repeat your Jamaica excursion this Thursday, April 16?
Does anyone have any lunch recommendations not super far from Fort Totten? Will have a car and was sort of hoping to avoid Flushing, any cuisine would be good. Thanks!
Legend of Taste is just a few minutes away. A reliable Szechuan spot.
Thanks, will file this away as it looks like they are closed on Tuesdays unfortunately and my immediate need is for tomorrow.
Too bad - keep it on file, its worth it.
Long ago, I was taken to Bourbon St for lunch (https://bourbonstreetny.com) by some co-workers &, if my memory serves me (& it might not), it was fine.
How about Tony’s Beechhurst Deli? https://www.instagram.com/tonysbeechurstdeli/
Thanks for the suggestions all, we wound up doing a little driving away from Ft Totten and had Doubles down on Jamaica Ave at D Roti Hut. They were pretty good but a little sweeter than what I’m used to. They also had a slaw that sort of reminded me of what would be on a banh mi which I’m not sure I’ve seen before. All of the stuff on the steam table looked pretty good and the Bake and Shark looked great. At $1.75 each for the doubles it was a great deal for a quick bite.
The takeout counter at the base of Jmart continues to be an easy solution for dim sum deprivation. The shui mai are excellent, the fish paste-stuffed peppers very good (though lacking the sauce that usually coats them), the cheung fun are a good rendition, and the spare rib tips with black bean are very tasty.
The pick-3-dishes counter in the same place is always doing hopping business, though I’ve yet to try it.
Northern Dumpling King to try more – a green bean & pork bun that I thought might include pickled green beans, a beef bun, and a cabbage and pork meat “pie” ie stuffed pancake. They have been sold out of the pickled pork and cabbage pie every time I’ve stopped in. The beef filling was a pleasant surprise – spicy! The stuffed pancake is hefty.
First time picking up frozen dumplings instead of cooked for snacks – they cooked up easily and without any bursting (and my friend will send the rest of the bag, cooked, back with the kid for whom I bought them).
I stopped in to take a look at what may or may not be an outlet of a chain from China which features lots of snacky stuff, including lamb dumplings and buns that were quite tempting, but I had loaded up already on snacks for the evening (dinner was being cooked by my friends), so that’s for another day.
The little Malaysian place (All Mart) in the corridor by the LIRR station has been closed the past few times I went by. Not sure what’s happening there. (The oyster cake guy moved across the street last I looked.)
Was planning to pick up Japanese-ish cheesecake / sponge cake hybrid and my own favorite sponge cakes for dessert, but then I saw mille crepes cake at the bakery on the same block as Northern Dumpling King, and it ended up being the star of the evening.
.
what is the last picture in this post?
This?
That’s the cooking area at the new place making pancakes, buns, dumplings, and soup.
everything looks fabulous except the fried dumplings, which remind me of the terrible dumplings we have all over westchester.
wanting to get back to Northern Dumpling King for the radish pie and other things
I think you mean Northern King Dumpling
.
Yes, I was thinking about their stuffed bao, which are much better than most (all?) others. I was originally going to go to Murray Hill for them and banchan, and possibly a take-out order from somewhere, but decided to do it another day.
I THINK the place I went was across from Golden Mall around the corner from Main Street. Isnt that one Northern Dumpling King? I would have to look back at the trip report to be sure.
Ah ok, I thought you meant this.
those dumplings were really great, but I want the pie at Northern Dumpling King and I think they have pickled green bean dishes too?
