Québec MICHELIN Guide 2025

Very surprised that there are so few places that got the star.

It varies based on the arrangements made with the local organizations that sponsor the guides. There seems to be little consistency in standards/criteria outside of Europe, even within a given region even though Michelin says there is.

I am also quite surprised at the low number of stars in Montreal (near where I grew up and where I’ve eaten at a lot of places that I might consider deserving) vs Bangkok/Singapore where I’ve lived for the past twenty years. In those two cities with great eating options I am baffled at the choices of who gets stars on a regular basis.

Yeah I recall similar reaction when they launched in the SF Bay area a few spots made me scratch my head. Tepid response to selections in Toronto. Similar feedback for worthy mentions such as Joe Beef oh boy while the service was top notch, the setup (I recall that’s not part of the criteria for selection was sub par) and the food for what I paid hmmm I wouldn’t go there again for sure. Similarly priced Monarque that I tried on my last trip was way better IMO.

But for restaurant Tanière³ to achieve 2 stars on the Quebec guide debut is quite an achievement.
Michelin 2 stars status is very difficult to get …
Agreeable or not, I’m still glad a “Canadian” restaurant that uses Canadian sourced ingredients has received such accolade … (not to downplay the Japanese/sushi restaurant in Toronto)
