Puerto Rico April 2026

And so it begins….pre-boarding meal at Logan Terminal C Davio’s, which I never would have considered but Spring Onion wanted salmon. He declared it delicious and plowed through. A good deal at $19. Pizza is basically sustenance. B just showed up and will eat the rest of my pizza. Maine Lunch on draft.

That salmon looks pretty tasty and $19 at an airport restaurant ain’t too shabby either.

Looking forward to reading another of your trip reports!

Forgot to mention that it’s the kids portion. Still a bargain by airport/Boston standards. We got outta there for $100 with 2 wines and a draft beer.

Nice! have a great trip!

Good choice! IMO it’s the best food available in Terminal C, by a wide margin. The Legal Seafood nearby is okay too, and just about everything else is mediocre to bad. (Sometimes I’ll hit Potbelly for carrying onto the plane.)

Saturday 18 April
Not much to report thus far, at least food-wise, but we’re having a wonderful time. Spent the first 2 nights in San Juan. On Friday, after visiting Castillo de San Cristóbal, we did a repeat lunch from last year at Deshistoria Birra y Empanadas. We all love this place. It’s chill, the employees are uniformly great. We plowed through several meat (beef and cheese, chicken ranch, pulled pork; beef was declared the winner) and mushroom and cheese varieties of empanadas. Nice Ocean Labs beer on tap. We were all too full for a proper dinner and the heat tends to sap our appetites. We are staying at a big Western hotel near the T-Mobile Distrito so we walked over to take in the spectacle. I couldn’t help but notice one place that reminded me of my old college stomping grounds (@tomatotomato and @MaxEntropy).

Sunday 19 April
Picked up our rental car and headed west to Isabela. We stopped on the way in Dorado to check that out. Had more empanadas/pastelillos at a simple beachside place and played some pool. We all snacked at “home” for dinner. Tomorrow, the beachside restaurants beckon.

El Dugout  !

Couldn’t help but notice that Spring Onion is sporting a big bandage on his pinkie. I hope it’s nothing serious and won’t interfere.

SO just got his cast taken off after a serious left forearm break and then he broke his left pinky playing football at recess. Now he can’t go surfing while we’re here, which he was very much looking forward to. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Serious bummer!

Serious bummer. The surfing in the area is great. During covid while I went to stay in the mountains to ski a friend went to stay in Puerto Rico to surf. I’m not sure who had the better time.

If it’s only his pinky, can he paddle and get up from the prone position? Paddling may be the larger issue. Once you’re standing the only things you need your hands for is to maintain balance.

Spring Onion tried his hand at surfing last year in Rincon and loved it, but he was in very shallow water, basically right at the shoreline. He and his dad (cautious physician especially when it comes to his boy) are concerned he might bite it—Murphy’s Law—right on his pinky. We brought our masks and snorkels so I think that’ll be our main water activity this time around. There’s always next year! :person_surfing:

This is our last morning in the northwest, today, we’re heading all the way across the island to catch the ferry to Vieques. We’ve a great few days out here; I haven’t played Wordle once! Yesterday, we did a snorkeling trip on a catamaran. The company provided a lunch of ham + cheese sandwiches (with the crusts cut off, as B put it, just like mom used to make; the guys loved these), a grilled chicken pasta salad, and a wonderful black bean/red onion/peppers salad that had a little kick. Unlimited beer, rum punch, and NA beverages. We ate out only twice, at the same place, Uma’s at Playa Jobos. We also ate here once last year. We like the chill vibe, it’s right on the beach, staff and food are nice.

First visit, SO got a huge burger, B got some grilled chicken sandwich, and I got the delicious grouper ceviche with awesome tostones. Bordello lighting due to the red umbrella.

Second visit, we weren’t terribly hungry, so a light lunch snack of grouper empanadas (tasty, but a little light on the fish) and fish bites for SO (these were excellent).

Some vacay shots to distract from the lack of food reporting.

Off to Vieques!

Beautiful - how was Vieques? We did a day trip to Culebra from Luquillo when we were in PR pre-kid. I’d love to go back to see more of the island.

I will try to write up the rest of our trip but we just got back last night and I gotta catch up on work first. I didn’t work as much as I usually do on vacation and now I’m paying for it!

Not much to write about, food-wise, but we had an awesome time. This was our 2nd time to Vieques and we just scheduled our 3rd trip for 2027 spring break.

My daughter would love getting to practice her Spanish there. We keep getting drawn back to the Bahamas for spring break, but we’ll have to get back to PR one of these days.
