Provence, marseille, nice

Going to aix-en-Provence, gordes and surrounding villages, marseille and the riviera for a couple of weeks.

Any places that are must eats? We will be traveling with a young one so more casual will be better however we aren’t opposed to finer establishments as long as they tolerate children.

Any info helps!

Francis Mallmann at Chateau La Coste is nice and relaxed with great food (and the art on the property is neat as well).
Dan B in Ventabren is great but probably not the best option with young children. I think tasting menu only.
Chez Gilbert in Cassis for bouillabaisse.

Bookmarked these thanks! The first two don’t look kid friendly at all but I’ll still check em out!

I can recommend Le Petit Maison in Cucuron. It’s been 13 years but recent friends I’ve sent there have confirmed our wonderful experience in 2012. Walking through the vineyards at dusk from our maison d’hote into the village was approaching magical coming from SE Asia metropolises. Cooking is high quality but atmosphere might be conducive for children.

I’d also recommend Auberge de la Clue in Plaisians on the north side of Ventoux. Sitting outside at lunch with a view of the mountain, passing around shared plates of lamb and pigs head in aspic from table to table, the best pommes gratin, an excellent fresh seafood salad and game focused stews as the main was super enjoyable. The fruit tart desserts were really excellent. I could have eaten 3 apricot tarts. Totally family friendly.

Looks like flus is closed I have bookmarked the other it looks great!

Ah too bad. It was run by a single family and maybe the younger generation didn’t want to continue. I had been there as recently as 2019.

I’ll piggy back on this thread. We will be in Aix-en-Provence for one night before catching a train up to Paris. If anyone has any thoughts on Aix specifically I’d be curious!

Enjoy your trip!!!

Thanks!

Because Cucuron made it on the list of villages, I’ll then suggest Ansouis, which is a beautiful village. You can eat at la Closerie (where I haven’t eaten in ages as my mum is getting too old to eat out for long) but it still looks fab. And there is a bakery that is really nice (attached to a restaurant which has a solid lunch and lovely view. Really though, those villagers put in a lot for this to win Most Beautiful Village just about all the time always.

Ansouis is really beautiful as well and La Cloiserie has an excellent reputation. We were underwhelmed when we there but it was many years ago and just one visit. Certainly I would consider trying it again if were staying in the area.

I’m not as familiar with which restaurants might suit someone with a young child, but the top tier are pretty all typical tasting menu-based.

There are some very good restaurants with good terrasses that are often a target of families, but many of those have so-so food. The Armand Crespo restaurants remain a good choice, from typical bistro far at Bistrot d’Antoine to the Bar des Oiseaux (a lot of pasta on the menu) and Type 55 (higher quality pizza/pasta/secondi). Fine Guele has an expansive terrasse. An exception is the Cantine de Meme, where a very limited menus is available as a children’s formule (plat + dessert) – but for an adventurous child.
