Portmanteau Food Names

corndog

apologies in advance but the pedant in me dearly wants to point out that corndog is a compound word as opposed to a portmanteau.

That’s more a “portmanDON’T”

The pedant in me says it’s complicated. There’s a linguistic process called reanalyzing. An example is “hamburger”, where the original meaning of “from Hamburg” was reanalyzed as ham-burger, allowing new words like lamburger or salmonburger. “Hot dog” has been reanalyzed to separate out the “dog” (hot dogs aren’t really dogs). I’d accept corndog as a portmanteau, maybe a partial portmanteau even.

And…

The pedant in me says those are event names rather than food names.

Sorry, I’ll see myself out now…

I have one of these downstairs in my building, and a former director used to love this place for work dinners. :face_with_spiral_eyes: While food is fine (except portions way too large, and meant for sharing), I hate the vibe.
