If famed local Diner “Becky’s” had a twin it would be this one in South Portland:

Had a great breakfast there yesterday w/ my wife & friend who drove us. $44.00 for the 3 of us before tip.

I read both on this thread and on @johntannerbbq’s blog about Wilson County Barbecue and finally tried it today. It was wonderful - thanks to all who provided intel on it!

I had a barbecue (what I would call pulled pork) plate with two sides and a choice of biscuit or hush puppy. As you can see, the portions are huge; I brought home enough for two more meals (and they have a nice station to accommodate packing leftovers). The pork was excellent but so were the sides, which is not always the case. The collards were quite spicy (I was warned when I ordered them) and delicious, the mashed potatoes and gravy were stellar (I am super picky about both) and HOT and the biscuit was fabulous, beautifully laminated inside. The gentleman at the far right in the top picture was making biscuits the whole time I was there, dozens and dozens of them. Knowing this is available only minutes from Trader Joe’s makes the prospect of a trip to Portland far less daunting. For those who care, they have a full bar and lots of beer choices. They also have a large attractive outdoor seating area @tomatotomato.

What did you think of the recent NYT North Carolina barbecue article?

I thought it was good as far as it went, and avoided the usual “Look at the natives” patronizing tone of past articles. All of the places mentioned (aside from Longleaf and the others around Raleigh) are on my Ten Best list. A little more time and research would have led them to Bum’s in Ayden, Wilber’s in Goldsboro, and Sid’s Catering in Belleville, all of which are as good as or better than the more widely known B’s, Skylight, and Grady’s.

Those interested in my top 10 list can go to my blog and search"Eastern." I have another list for the Piedmont (the search term) that has a different style. I’ll be revising that list after a projected August trip down there.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll bet that Wilson County BBQ would work as takeout (in addition to the patio seating)?

Could be a fun option for us sometime when we’re driving up on our way for a getaway with the dog along. Because me getting a break from cooking on vacation is

https://lancastersbbqmooresville.com Been awhile since we been to Lancaster’s on a trip to Charlotte then out to the Smokey’s. We ate bbq every place we could and pie (of course) . We loved it. Didn’t hurt we sat in the school bus and just loved all the racing decorations. About to check on your blog ! Later trip to Asheville I stopped at a place I now have no idea of the name - wasn’t impressed. On way back to Charlotte found a bbq place affiliated with a church. The bbq was very good as was the pie ! I always go for the brisket, hush puppies if available, collards and pie. Just me .

So far, my leftovers have reheated beautifully, including my partially eaten biscuit. Makes me think of getting several biscuits next time and freezing some…

John glad to hear that Wilbers is still alive and well. It’s been way too long since we toured the eastern NC BBQ spots.

PS I hit Fresh Air BBQ in Jackson GA pre internet. I was armed only with a NYT article.
