[Phuket, Thailand] Southern Thai options at Tu Kab Khao

Tu Kab Khao is another one of those Phuket restaurants that keeps getting mentioned by different Singaporean/Malaysian foodie friends. It “looks” rather touristy, but actually serves up pretty down-to-earth, authentic-to-boot Southern Thai dishes.

The name of the restaurant is taken from the local Phuket-Thai-Chinese term which refers to a traditional wooden food cabinet. We have exactly the same piece of furniture in olden-day Penang, known as “Kab Tu”. Located in downtown Phuket Old Town, it’s easily recognisable by a kitsch giant blue lobster artwork clinging to its sidewall.

Our lunch consisted of the restaurant’s typical Southern-Thai dishes:

  1. Chicken satay skewers

  2. Fishballs - luk chin pla (Thai: ลูกชิ้นปลา)

  3. Southern Thai crab curry with rice noodles - khanom jeen nam yaa puu (Thai: ขนมจีนน้ำยาปู)

  1. Green curry with chicken and baby eggplants - kaeng khiao wan kai (Thai: แกงเขียวหวาน)

Desserts

  1. Coconut ice-cream

  2. Panna cotta with strawberry sauce

Very good meal at a beautiful spot, right in the middle of Phuket Old Town’s tourist belt.

Another gorgeous room!

Very interesting – I tried to find a pic of one but couldn’t.

Looks delicious! Do they offer a choice of shelled or in-shell crab, or just the former because it’s an upscale place?

They have both.

Love your meal!

A bit uneasy with the lobster. Looks like a giant insect.

I was thinking the same when I first saw it! :joy:

They are closely related!

Right? I’ve seen them referred to as ‘sea bugs’ more times than I can count.

Me as well Crawfish are often called Mudbugs where I grew up.
In reality it was vice versa, it is believed that Insects evolved from Crustaceans. So “Crabs of the Land”?

I’ve had delicious fried grasshoppers at the Thai park in Berlin. Taste just like potato chips

Yep. the ones in Oaxaca taste like Spicy Lime-Chili Shrimpish Chips!

Is that mesh netting in the front?

My grandmother had one that looked very similar (probably my great grandmother’s) that we still had all the way up to the last move!

It was not used for food in my memory, but I will ask my mom about earlier.

Yes, mesh netting, to allow any freshly-cooked food to “breathe”.

The wooden legs stand on little clay vessels which have grooves filled with water - mini-moats to keep out pesky ants.

Ours went closer to the floor (another shelf) and anything like those clay vessels were long gone by the time I came around :joy:

I’m going to send the pic to my mom. I think she’ll get a kick out of it. I bet ours was also a food storage / pantry cupboard in her grandmother’s day.
