Pho in Monmouth County

My go to places for pho is Pho Viet Express in Toms River (I know its Ocean County but close enough) and Pho 99 in Eatontown. I eat more often at Pho Viet and prefer their broth a little more than Pho 99 but it depends on the day. Good luck.

For example, I think they have about twenty different Phos, as well as a full Vietnamese menu (four columns, or about 100 items on their paper menu). Mark always gets Pho Thit Heo Nuung (Pho with Grilled Pork on the side); I get Mi Hoanh Thanh (Wonton Soup with Yellow Noodles, because I’m not a big rice noodle fan).

I have had Pho a few times, certainly not enough to recommend anything.
I will however recommend Tampopo, a great movie about a woman’s quest to make the best bowl of noodles and the motley crew that helps her.

Man Jr we got crickets on this one!! haha. I personally don’t feel like pho in general and pho99 in particular is an exciting HOdown, I’d much rather do a place with a large menu where we can share a bunch of new things! Unless we do a pho crawl, but logistics on that might be tough.

I agree–pho does not lend itself to the “everyone gets a bit of everything” HOdown we all seem to prefer.

Biiiiiiiiig bump!

A friend has spent the last month in Singapore/Thailand/Vietnam and was posting pho and banh mi so of course now I need to get some Vietnamese food. Are Pho Viet Express in TR and Vietnam Bistro in Howell still the only places in/near Monmouth County? Going to need ideas because he’s due home soon and now he’s hooked too! TIA

There’s Pho 99 on Rt 36 in Eatontown. Also Hen in Tinton Falls near the outlets.

There used to be 2 places within a few blocks of each other off of Rt 70 in Brick. PhoTastic is one but I can’t find the other so maybe it’s closed already.

Thanks - I know about Hen but am still waiting for someone I know/trust to report in about it! I’ve only seen some (bad) flashy posts on Instagram thus far. SIGH.

Is Pho99 more than ‘just okay’? I feel like people were going there because there weren’t any other options…

What about Miss Saigon in Freehold? And Pho Da Nang in Sayreville is not far from Monmouth County at the north end.

I think @joonjoon is/was a fan of Pho 99 maybe he can add something. I haven’t been there in a while to be honest. The Sprout went to Hen I think a couple of days after they opened and thought it had potential but needed to work out some service kinks.

We usually to go to Pho Express. They don;t have banh mi but make the best shrimp toast there is .

I’ve only been once but I put it in the just okay category. The broth did not have the depth of the better places I’ve been to.

But like I said I’ve only been once.

As of the last time I went to Pho 99 I would say they have the best pho out of the places I’ve been to. Their special combination pho is excellent in all areas including the variety of meats. There are fancier places in Edison, but I am not in the business of paying big bucks on fancy pho.

If you want more than pho I would go to pho da nang in Sayreville, they have the best viet menu by a wide margin.

Having said that, I have not been to any of the other places mentioned except Miss Saigon and that was one time like 15 years ago.

As you can see pho 99’s bowl is pretty impressive pho 99 Eatontown - #55 by joonjoon

When I get pho I always ask for rare beef on the side and for an extra side of “nuoc beo” - beef fat with scallions. I like to add the nuoc beo in stages to my meal so I can go from clean broth to fatty broth as I go.

In the past couple years I’ve only had pho from my local joint here in South Plainfield (Saigon) which is priced right and has all the things I want. The other spots around me are priced significantly higher and I’m not about to pay close to 20 bucks for a bowl unless it’s got stuff like oxtail which pho99 delivers.

Pho-99 is my only Pho experience, and I have enjoyed it everything I have had it. Including Monday of this week, I got it to go.
