Pho 34 [Matawan]

I just found out there’s a new Pho place in Matawan! Word is it’s the same people who had the Pho place in Lincroft and Red Bank (pho le) back in the day. They have “Super bowl” on the menu which the previous places had! Might head over today.

That’s exciting. Loved the food when they were Saigon 2 in Lincroft. Still enjoyed the food at Pho Le but didn’t go as often as always felt cramped at the Red Bank spot.

Where in Matawan near Papa Ganache?

No, it’s in the Palms Plaza just south of Big Ed’s and Morristown Road.

Thanks

Made it in today!

Pho was great, broth is very clean and delicate, one of the clearest broths I’ve ever seen (I personally like “dirty” broths just as much, they are also great in their own way). Their homemade chili sauce is amazing! One of the best chili condiments I’ve had.

I tried to ask for “nuoc beo” (fatty broth) but they said they didn’t have it, I’m not sure the guy knew what I was asking for though.

Will be back to get the “super bowl” next time.

There are some issues but I will chalk it up to them having just opened and not having their stuff together.

I had a nice chat with the gentleman at the counter who says he is part owner now and has been working with the original owner since Saigon I. That’s really nice to see and the service was wonderful.

Also there is an Indian place opening across the street!

The Indian place is not across the street, in the same lot!

Actually, they told us yesterday that they opened almost a year ago.

The pho was good, but they have fewer varieties than Pho Da Nang five miles up the road, and they don’t have anything like Mark’s favorite, Pho Thit Heo Nuong (beef pho with grilled pork on the side). At Pho 34, Mark got the Shrimp & Scallops lunch special, mostly because he doesn’t get scallops very often, and he said it was okay, but basically just a typical Chinese dish.

Also, our table wobbled. We hate wobbly tables! Didn’t see any homemade chili sauce, just sriracha and hoisin. Also they use disposable chopsticks, though I’m not sure if disposable wooden chopsticks are more environmentally sound than reusable plastic ones or not. :frowning:

It’s close, but I think we’ll stick with Pho Da Nang.

Oh man I can’t believe they opened a year ago with the way the place looks…it kind of has a spooky abandoned feel, not the way you want your place looking a year into service.

You have to ask for all the other condiments, I just assumed the reason it’s not on every table is because they haven’t gotten their stuff together. It’s not like this is their first rodeo.

As for Pho Da Nang, I don’t think anyone in the area has a bigger menu than them! I did notice the smaller menu but I’m just in it for the combination Pho and Super Bowl.

And we’re just in it for the Wonton Soup with Yellow Noodles and Pho with a side of Grilled Pork (though in hot weather I occasionally get the Summer Shrimp Roll instead of the Wonton Soup).
