I had dinner at the bar at Petite Lil’s in North Beach Sunday night after a Valkyries game. Petite Lil’s is a “preview” of Lillie Coit’s, which will supposedly open at some point in the same space. They’re across from Washington Square and are open late for SF - until 1 in the morning, including the kitchen.
It looks like they have been in preview / soft open mode for a bit over 2 years now
Menus
First, a generous welcome splash of Champagne!
To drink I also had a Dirty Junipero Martini ($17), which has Junipero Gin, dry vermouth, and olive juice, with a couple of olives as garnish. It was a good Martini and quite dirty.
They have a selection of tinned fish and seafood. My first choice - the Mackerel Pate - had run out, so instead I had the Mussels in Pickled Sauce ($22), which was good. There was a tin full of mussels in a slightly vinegary escabeche, and a number of crunchy toasted bread rounds. There was also a small salad of pickled shallots, dill, and I think parsley.
I also had some Oysters, broiled with escargot butter (six for $25). I had arrived just a bit too early for their “Oyster Jubilee” which is between 10pm and 1am - you get six more oysters during the Jubilee! I forgot to write down what type of oysters they were, but they are the same as the ones served raw. This was very good. The oysters were plump and just cooked, with an escargot butter that had green herbs.
Next I had the Steak Frites with an 8oz bavette ($29). There’s also a more substantial one with a 12oz NY steak if you’re hungry, and a 32oz tomahawk steak (limited to 2 a night) if you’re really hungry. The fries are a bit unconventional - crinkle cut. They were pretty good fries. I dipped them in some of the aioli provided. The steak was delicious - cooked to medium rare as requested and topped with herb butter.
For dessert, I had one of the three Espresso Martinis on offer - the Natale Classic ($17), which has Absolut Elyx Vodka, Kahlua, HITW cold brew, and amaretto. It was served in a frosted copper coupe and was delicious, one of the best espresso Martini’s I’ve had.
I also had a slice of St. Honore Cake, which is from nearby Victoria bakery. This was a delicous and light slice of cake, with many different layers. There was a choux pastry base with chocolate, a light rum soaked sponge cake layer, custard, fresh whipped cream, and a cream puff on top to gild the lily.
This was a very enjoyable dinner. I’m glad that there are more late night options now in North Beach and I’m glad that their kitchen stays open late as well.
