Penang [Waltham, MA]

I really wanted this to be good, but it was not. I have vaguely good memories of the Boston location, though it has been at least 10 years since I was there. Unfortunately, this time was not a positive experience. Their menu is gigantic and kind of a mashup of Malaysian, Thai, Chinese. I’m told the (gyoza-style) dumplings were decent, but didn’t have any. The spicy seafood noodle soup had a metallic off-taste and was left mostly uneaten. Mango chicken was edible but really mediocre. Fresh rolls were poorly rolled and fell apart. The lettuce inside didn’t look super fresh. The desserts were ok (mango sticky rice with underripe mangos, and a red bean pudding). Coconut rice was good. We might try again after a while, and order more strictly Malaysian dishes, but not in a hurry.

Thanks for reporting back. I was hopeful too.
