[Penang] Street eats in Lower Penang Road area

Super-excited to get to meet Guy Dimond, one of my food heroes, today - he used to be the Food & Drink Editor at 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻. I’d been collecting 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻’s annual Eating & Drinking Guide for over two decades! Guy is currently vacationing in Penang with his wife, Susan Low, who was the Editor of 𝗕𝗕𝗖 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱.

We spent the whole morning talking about food. :joy:
Introduced Guy and Susan to 𝘏𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘮 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳 (Hainanese-style fried noodles), fried rice and 𝘴𝘢𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘯 (Cantonese-style braised flat rice noodles) at 𝗬𝗶𝗸 𝗞𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗲𝗲 kopitiam on Kimberley Street.

The old Hainanese owner-chef, Ong Khye Jim, whose grandfather founded the kopitiam 80 years ago, no longer does the cooking, but has passed his skills down to Goh Chong Hung, a Teochew chef who expertly reproduce all the noodle classics effortlessly.

We then adjourned to 𝗝𝗼𝗼 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗶 kopitiam on Penang Road for its famous 𝘛𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘸 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘭, and Penang-style char koay teow from MICHELIN Bib Gourmand-listed Jin Kor.

Our final stop was another MICHELIN Bib Gourmand-listed eatery - 888 Hokkien Mee on Presgrave Street. A mixture of Hokkien yellow wheat noodles and rice vermicelli are steeped in a spicy pork-prawn broth, garnished with shrimps, roast pork, pork lardons and pork-ribs.

Went to 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁 (upstairs of 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗻) on Presgrave Street yesterday evening with Susan and Guy.

Right up their alley - Susan was the managing editor of Business Traveler magazine, before going on to edit WINE magazine. She spent few years as a freelance writer, visiting vineyards and interviewing winemakers, as well as reviewing restaurants for The Good Food Guide, Time Out London and delicious magazine (where she was the deputy editor).
