[Penang, Malaysia] Modern-Penang cuisine at Mojo Jojo, Lyf Hotel

Mojo Jojo which opened on Nov 17 is helmed by the talented Wagyu Tan, ex-Communal Table by Gen, and last seen heading the popular but now-defunct Villains on the Andaman. The same talented kitchen quartet from Villains are now running Mojo Jojo, which have the same owners.

Some of the dishes we had from the Nov and Dec menus include:
This risotto-like dish cooked using Japanese Koshihikari premium short-grain rice channels the flavors of the traditional Malaysian nasi lemak - and a very good rendition was presented here: milky-rich from the coconut milk used for cooking the rice, with fresh fish fillets, and the crisp-fried anchovies as well as toasted groundnuts to present the textural contrast. Tiny dollops of sambal provided the chili hit.

Best fries this part of town. The duck was perfectly textured, and as good as any that one gets at a top-rated French spot anywhere.

Looked deceptively โ€œcasualโ€ and rustic, but the smoky, creamy fish was a flavor explosion.

Dessert:

Some of the best coffees in town - from single origin Ethiopian Arabica, to house blends.

On our recent trip to KL, we stayed at the lyf hotel. We didnโ€™t even consider dining at the hotel restaurant, which had a strangely off-putting branding image. I looked at the cafe coffee menu and decided against trying my luck there. The cafe also had some strange branding. The air conditioning was also too cold for my liking. Looks like the Penang counterpart is a completely different beast!

The room seems so minimalist that it doesnt look finished to me.

On the other hand, I can put up with any decorative issues if someone was going to feed me the duck and chips/frites/fries. What was the sauce please, Peter?

And how was the fish toast? I remember, from ages back, that youโ€™re not keen on lao gan ma. :grinning:

Yes, and Mojo Jojo is a tenant there, independent of the hotel itself.

It was an interesting sauce - rich, buttery, but with a citrusy hint. Faint nod to duck a lโ€™orange, I suppose.

It was very good - the green goddess dressing was really creamy. You remember correctly, John - but the lao gan ma was hardly detectable here (thank God!), as I dislike its trademark obtrusive Sichuan peppercorn scent.
