[Penang, Malaysia] Lunch at Taiwanese Palace, Carnarvon Street

𝗧𝗮𝗶𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 (第一臺 懷念ㄟ所在) is one of a growing number of Chinese restaurants from Mainland Penang who’d decided to expand to the more lucrative market on Penang Island. It’s also the latest in a slew of bistro-like eateries in George Town offering Taiwanese casual eats.

Offering mainly plate lunches and set meals to cater to office workers, this newish Carnarvon Street branch serves up simple, tasty options. Our lunch today:

:small_orange_diamond:Signature braised pork rice - Taiwanese-style braised pork served with steamed white rice is called Lu Rou Fan (Chinese: 卤肉饭). The pork dish tends to be very aromatic, scented with Chinese 5-spice like star-anise, Shaoxing wine and soy sauce. Often, pork belly is used, giving the dish a very rich, fatty, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

The majority of Penangites are similar to the Taiwanese as they are also of Fujianese descent - but the Penangites’ palate has evolved in the past two centuries here to demand a spike of chili heat in their food. Here, a chili-garlic condiment on the side was the perfect accompaniment to undercut the richness of the dish.

:small_orange_diamond:Three-Cup Chicken - this is the classic Taiwanese dish, known as San Pei Chi (Chinese: 三杯雞), comprising of chopped, bite-sized chicken pieces cooked with slivers of ginger, and 1 cup each of sesame oil, soy sauce and rice wine.

:small_orange_diamond:Soy-braised chicken leg with egg noodles - another simple lunch plate, done very well here with perfectly-balanced seasoning and very tasty noodles.

:small_orange_diamond:Taiwanese-style fried chicken - not a big fan of panko crumbs, which was what’s used here. The chicken nuggets were well-marinated, though.

:small_orange_diamond:Cheese tuna omelette roll - a modern-ish Taiwanese snack: tortilla-like roll filled with minced tuna. The chili sauce saved a rather dry-ish dish from ignominy.

:small_orange_diamond:Dessert: Signature mixed boba shaved ice dessert, with red beans, taro balls and milk. Very good.

Love the efficient, friendly service. Food renditions here are lighter and tastier than those served in similar establishments around town.

Looks like a very well executed Traditional Taiwanese Menu, great Pictures and Copy as always.

Are you sure that was Panko on the Popcorn Chicken?
It looks very much like the Coarse(Thick) Sweet Potato Flour/Starch [ 蕃薯粉 ] that is typically used for this Dish.

I continue to be surprised that, even in casual eateries like this, the plating is so nice. Really appetising.

They could give lessons to the folks in Manchester’s Chinatown where delicious food is generally just thrown on a plate.

I’ll have the Lu Rou Fan, please.

Did they have Turkey Rice on the menu also? Love that.

You’re most likely right!

No, in fact, I was looking for that particular dish! No Chiayi chicken rice either - a dish which evolved from the original turkey version.

A very different restaurant culture here - everything in a casual Chinese eatery is kept pristine clean, toilets are spotless, tables are wiped again & again. Service staff are very polite and very efficient.

I shudder at Chinese restaurants in London (I’d never visited those in Manchester yet), most of which looked rather dodgy. But then, Chinese restaurant culture in the UK evolved from very humble, working-class beginnings. Despite some degree of “gentrification” over the last couple of decades, it has never really shed its plebeian persona.

I was very pleasantly surprised how delicious turkey rice can be. Not dry and cardboardish as some roast turkey can be.

Chiayi is our 1st Taiwan stop in about 2 months. I see chicken/turkey rice in my near future. + some of the goodies you just had at Taiwanese Palace.

And fishhead from SmartFish. Yum!!:yum:
