[Penang, Malaysia] Lunch at Hot Bowl Penang White Curry Mee, Rangoon Road

Had lunch at the popular Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜„๐—น ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—–๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ (โ€œmeeโ€ is the Hokkien/Fujianese word for โ€œnoodlesโ€) on Rangoon Road. That place continues to pack the crowds in.

It used to be popularly known as Dhoby Ghaut Curry Mee when it was located at the said location (Dhoby Ghaut) near Market Cross back in 1992. These days, itโ€™s reinvented itself, coined the term โ€œwhite curry meeโ€, as its owners, Ipoh-born folks, said that โ€œif we can have ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ง๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ, why canโ€™t we have ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ?โ€.

A standard bowl of โ€œwhite curry meeโ€: you get a mix of yellow Hokkien wheat noodles and thin rice โ€œbee hoonโ€ noodles, garnished with tofu puffs, blood cockles and slivers of cuttlefish, all steeped in a coconut milk-rich gravy. Spoon over the chili oil condiment for a serious stab of heat.

The โ€œ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆโ€ label has been copied by every other Penang curry mee vendor ever since. A bowl of their famously incendiary-hot chili paste is placed on every table, for the diner to add into oneโ€™s own bowl of white curry mee. Be aware, the chili paste is ๐˜๐˜Œ๐˜™๐˜  spicy!

Donโ€™t miss ordering their melt-in-the-mouth poached chicken - absolutely delicious and one of the best to be found on the island.

The pork meatballs and gingery beef tendon meatballs are delightful sides to order.

One of the best Penang-style curry noodles weโ€™d had in a while.
