[Penang, Malaysia] Fusion-Korean at NEP!, Campbell Street

Dinner this evening at ๐—ก๐—˜๐—ฃ! on Campbell Street, helmed by talented young duo, Goh Chia Ye and Koh Yee Ming, whoโ€™d spent a decade in Singapore working under celebrity-chef and Masterchef Singapore judge, Bjorn Shen, before returning to Penang to ply their trade.

Dining room is a nifty little space with seats along one long counter, somewhat reminiscent of an izakaya eatery.

NEP!'s menu changes periodically, and its current one is inspired by the duoโ€™s recent holiday in Korea.

Our dinner this evening:

  1. ๐˜’๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ - fried cauliflower, sour plum and shredded wild betel leaves.

  1. ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜‘๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ - Korean-style ๐˜ซ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (mung bean pancake) , julienned jicama & cucumber, and ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ซ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ (spicy fermented bean and chili paste). Itโ€™s accompanied by ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ช (Korean fermented rice wine).

  1. ๐˜š๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ - Korean pork burger - itโ€™s more akin to ๐˜ฅ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ซ๐˜ช ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ, but the menu description lists it as tteokgalbi. Itโ€™s served with ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช, a very good ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช relish and ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ lettuce-and-perilla wrap.

  1. ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ ๐˜›๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ซ๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ - cold glass noodles, ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ (mixed vegetables), ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, raw oysters, and calamansi lime.

  1. ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜บ ๐˜’๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ช - grilled pork skin, ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ถ ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ soy glaze, wok-fried vegetables.

Desserts

  1. ๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ซ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ - candlenut-Gula Melaka Korean rice puffs, ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ cream and mixed berries compote.

  2. ๐˜•๐˜Œ๐˜—! ๐˜Š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ - deconstructed cendol, with coconut granita, pandan-scented rice flour noodles, red bean cracker, and Gula Melaka sauce.
