[Penang, Malaysia] Dim sum options at Canton-i, Queensbay Mall

The popular Canton-i chain is one of the best places to enjoy dim sum in Penang. It maintains two very well-patronised outlets - one in each of Penang’s two most popular malls: Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall.

We had some visiting family members from Singapore last week, and we lunched at Canton-i in Queensbay Mall, which seemed brighter and more spacious compared to its Gurney Plaza counterpart.

As with most Cantonese eateries in Penang, there was an impressive range of Cantonese-style roast meats at the glass display case upfront: cha-siu (Cantonese-style caramelised roast pork), siu yoke (crisp-skinned roast pork), siu ngaap (roast duck). But we were here for yum cha and decided to skip the roasts for this lunch.

We started off with some century eggs and pickled ginger, done very well here.

Our dim sum spread:

Siu mai - steamed pork-shrimp dumplings.

Har kow - steamed shrimp dumplings.

Chiuchow fun guo - steamed Teochew dumplings, with minced pork, peanuts, garlic chives, jicama (yam bean), dried shrimp, and shiitake mushrooms filling.

Fish-balls with salted duck’s egg-yolk.

Glutinous rice dumplings.

Steamed pork dumplings.

Stir-fried radish cake with beansprouts and egg.

Golden-fried glutinous rice flour dumplings with meat centres.

Steamed fish-maw stuffed with fish-paste.

Lor mai kai - steamed glutinous rice, with chicken, shitake mushroom and Chinese waxed sausage.*

Left: Crisp-fried bean-curd sheets, served with a mayonnaise dip, and right: Char siu cheung fun - steamed rice rolls with caramelised BBQ pork filling.

Overall, very high standards of dim sum here, and above-average service level.
