[Penang, Malaysia] Brunch at Ah Leng Char Koay Teow, Tong Hooi Cafe on Dato' Keramat Road

Teoh Koon Leng aka “Ah Leng”, 79, is one of the leading aficionados of Penang char koay teow. After building a reputation for himself purveying his brand of char koay teow on Kimberley Street (“Swatow Kay”) in the 1980s, Ah Leng now only cooks at a stall in front of his home on Lorong Zoo Enam, off Zoo Road in Ayer Itam from 5pm to 10pm daily, except Tue & Wed. But, mind you, Ah Leng is very fond of taking off-days unannounced, so you take a drive to Ayer Itam at your own risk.

More dependable is the other Ah Leng Char Koay Teow stall at Tong Hooi kopitiam on Dato’ Keramat Road. This stall is operated by Ah Leng’s two daughters, Teoh Chye Yong, 46, and Teoh Chye Hong, 43, in the morning, and by his eldest son, Teoh Yeong Hee, 53, in the later part of the day.

If one comes at breakfast/brunch time, elder sister, Chye Yong takes the orders whilst her younger sister, Chye Hong wields the massive, well-seasoned wok effortlessly despite her small physique.

Ah Leng Char Koay Teow at Tong Hooi kopitiam, Dato’ Keramat, opens 9.30am to 3.30pm Sun & Mon, 10.30am to 3.30pm on other days, except Wed (closed).
