[Penang, Malaysia] Best thosai at Michael & Devi Cafe, Market Cross

Best 𝘡𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘒π˜ͺ in Penang at Michael & Devi Cafe on Market Cross (Lintang Pasar). The 80-year-old 𝘡𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘒π˜ͺ spot was managed by Michael & his wife, Devi, for nearly two decades until 2013, when their daughter, Priscilaa Michael took over.

At the time, Priscilaa was only 15 years old when her father, Michael, fell seriously ill. Her mother had passed on a few years earlier. For the past 12 years, the very eloquent Priscilaa has single-handedly took upon herself to manage her family’s business with unbridled enthusiasm and amazing efficiency!

Michael and Devi Cafe’s claim-to-fame is their spongey-soft, moist thosai, served with a dollop red chili-tinged kara-chutney, and lightly spiced sambhar gravy. Also, don’t muss their incredibly light, crisp, golden-fried 𝘷𝘒π˜₯𝘒π˜ͺ as well. Best ever.

I need to return and try the other menu items on offer.

It’s Thaipusam in Penang today - the largest Hindu festival in the state, and when up to 1.5 million Hindu devotees plus tourists converged upon the island to either take part in the religious festivities, or else witness the spectacle.

We were moving around on foot - many roads in downtown George Town are closed to traffic, so walking is the best way to move around!

Anyhoo, we stopped at Michael & Devi for a quick bite at lunch-time - still the best thosai (dosa) and vadai in town.

Back to the Thaipusam festivities afterwards!
