๐๐ผ๐ป๐๐ผ๐ป๐ด is a breakfast item of Javanese origin which I missed from Singapore, as itโs very hard to find anywhere in Malaysia north of Johore. It consisted of ๐ฏ๐ข๐ด๐ช ๐ฉ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ช๐ต (compressed rice cakes), drenched in a rich, delicious ๐ด๐ข๐บ๐ถ๐ณ ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฉ - a soupy turmeric-tinged, coconut milk-rich vegetable gravy.
๐๐ข๐บ๐ถ๐ณ ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฉ would consist of ๐ด๐ข๐บ๐ถ๐ณ ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ค๐ช๐ด (green beans), ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ (jicama), ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ต๐ฆ๐ญ (carrot), ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ฃ๐ช๐ด (cabbage), ๐ต๐ข๐ฉ๐ถ (hard tofu), ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ข๐ฉ๐ถ (dried tofu skin) and ๐ต๐ฆ๐ญ๐ถ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ด (hard-boiled egg).
Square cubes of ๐ฏ๐ข๐ด๐ช ๐ฉ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ช๐ต (compressed rice) provide the carbs, and a contrast to the spicy, strong-flavoured gravy.
๐ฆ๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ on the corner of Jalan Datoโ Koyah and Clarke Street, is one of the very few places in Penang where one can find this rare delicacy. And itโs a very good one, too - spicy-delicious.
