[Penang] Lontong from Simple Cafe, Clarke Street

๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด is a breakfast item of Javanese origin which I missed from Singapore, as itโ€™s very hard to find anywhere in Malaysia north of Johore. It consisted of ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ช ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ต (compressed rice cakes), drenched in a rich, delicious ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฉ - a soupy turmeric-tinged, coconut milk-rich vegetable gravy.

๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฉ would consist of ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ด (green beans), ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ (jicama), ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ (carrot), ๐˜ฌ๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ด (cabbage), ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ (hard tofu), ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ (dried tofu skin) and ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ด (hard-boiled egg).
Square cubes of ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ช ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ต (compressed rice) provide the carbs, and a contrast to the spicy, strong-flavoured gravy.

๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ on the corner of Jalan Datoโ€™ Koyah and Clarke Street, is one of the very few places in Penang where one can find this rare delicacy. And itโ€™s a very good one, too - spicy-delicious.
