[Penang] Gujarati chaats from Preeti's Farsan, Church Street

Some really superb Gujerati options from 2-month-old Preetiโ€™s Farsan on Church Street.

This little family-run spot has absolutely the best collection of North Indian ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ด we had ever come across in Penang.

Owner-chef, Pravinabahen Manoj Kumar aka Preetiben, conceptualizes all the menu items at her restaurant. Born in Surat, Gujarat, she sought to bring traditional Gujarati dishes from her birthplace to Penang. Her son, Vishaal Manoj Kumar, a 100% true-blue Penangite, manages the restaurant.

What we tried this evening:

  1. ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช - crisp-fried ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช spheres filled with spiced potatoes and chickpeas, served with mint-coriander water and tamarind-jaggery liquid.

  1. ๐˜Š๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ช - sweet, masala-spiced milk tea.

  1. Left: Classic sweet ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช - chilled, sweetened yoghurt drink. Right: ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ด (๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ) - spiced buttermilk, yoghurt drink.

  2. ๐˜’๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ต - crisp, hard-shelled ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด with spiced green pea stuffing, topped with sev crisp noodles, spicy dal relish, yoghurt, chutneys and chopped tomatoes, onion and fresh coriander.

  3. ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ท ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ซ๐˜ช - spicy mรฉlange of green peas, potatoes, cauliflower and vegetables, served with soft buns and chopped onion relish.

  1. ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช - deep-fried pastries filled with spiced green peas, served with tamarind-jaggery dip.

  1. ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ต - crisp crackers topped with potatoes, chickpeas, chutneys, yoghurt, black chickpeas (๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข), crispy ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ท noodles, chopped tomatoes, onion, fresh coriander and masala spices.

  1. ๐˜‹๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ช - ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ท (soft bun) sandwiching mashed potatoes with sweet-spicy-tangy ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ช ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข spices. In Gujarati language, โ€œ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ชโ€ means โ€œpressedโ€.

  2. ๐˜Ž๐˜ถ๐˜ซ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ด - crisp-fried pastries with spiced ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ข ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ญ (chickpea) filling, served with a tamarind-jaggery dip.

  3. Mixed vegetables ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช, served with onion ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข, mango chutney, and ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ญ sauce.

  1. Left: ๐˜Ž๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ ๐˜ซ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ - fried milk-balls soaked in rose-water syrup.
    Right: ๐˜™๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ช - ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ (Indian cottage cheese) disc soaked in sweetened milk.

Utterly delicious offerings from this warm, cosy place. I think I just found my latest favorite lunch/dinner spot!

Awesome photos. I want to eat that right now. Though I am a teeny bit surprised not seeing dokla on the menu.

There are pics of dhokla, jalebi, and more so maybe theyโ€™re specials or as-available.
