[Penang] Belachan Tapas Bar on Chulia Street

Jenelle Tan of Michelin-selected ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น has upped the ante with her newest dining wonder: 10-day-old sister-outlet ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป on 473 Chulia Street. Here, Jenelle put on her creative hat and, again, came up with a whole new selection of inventive, modern-fusion dishes.

We started off with some bespoke gin-based cocktails which blended in local herbs like lemongrass and torch-ginger.

Our dinner last night, corny dish-names on the menu aside, was a truly enjoyable affair as we waited to be surprised with each course:

  1. ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜‚ - creamy blue cheese dip with traditional Chinese biscuits, served with slow-roasted garlic and cherry tomatoes in balsamic dressing

  1. ๐—•๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ธ ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐— ๐˜† ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ - crisp Indian cheese fritters, with creamed spinach dip

  1. ๐—•๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐˜†๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—™๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ - chickpea salad with toasted curry leaves, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh coriander and paneer cheese

  2. ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ - house special black truffle mousse on toast

  1. ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ - stir-fried โ€œnoodleโ€ strips of fresh coconut flesh, topped with grilled prawns, homemade prawn butter and a ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ข ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ tuille. This was the house signature dish - and was very tasty from its deep, rich shellfish flavours which complemented the creamy coconut strips very well.

  1. ๐—ข๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ธ-๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ธ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ - over-baked penne pasta, with seafood-coconut custard. My favourite dish for the evening - it was creamy-rich and delicately spiced.

  2. ๐—ฃรข๐˜รฉ ๐—ฆ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ - grilled crispy bread with French pork liver pรขtรฉ & pickled onions. The addition of pickled onions was a brilliant touch, as it cuts into the richness of the pรขtรฉ.

  3. Dessert: ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜€ - deep-fried Mars Bar with vanilla ice-cream. The last time I had this was in Glasgow, Scotland - a cholesterol bomb, so itโ€™s a rare indulgence.

Flavours were full-on here, and clever twists to traditional dishes often catch the diners unawares.

Am off to India - Mumbai and the cities along the Malabar Coast for the next 3 weeks.

Very excited at the dining prospects, although the bulk of our trip will be to visit UNESCO-listed historical sites. :blush:
