Pears Restaurant - Markham

First time making a top level post so sorry if I missed anything!

Husband and I went to Pears on Christmas Eve as a treat before the marathon of family obligations over the holidays. We went last year when they first opened (before they had their liquor license) and enjoyed it, so we thought we’d go back. Being within walking distance of home also helps!!

I would describe Pears as an Asian fusion restaurant, but not in the cultural appropriation kind of way. As a CBC, it feels like the sort of stuff I would make, if I went down a very different career path and was half as accomplished as Keith Pears lol.

Velvet Bloom cocktail on left, Golden Kyoto on right.

KFC sliders. Surprisingly filling for the seemingly tiny bites.

Crispy broccoli - probably my favourite dish of the night, which surprises me! I thought it was just really well cooked.

Typhoon shelter bone marrow. This was what I was really looking forward to, because I didn’t order it the last time we came in and I just love typhoon shelter anything. I think my expectations were perhaps too high though. It was tasty, but I don’t think deep fried mantou are the best substrate to have with bone marrow.

Mala carbonara. I’m totally going to borrow this idea for home cooking. It was very tasty.

Basque cheesecake (plus you can see the bottle of wine we split). The ice cream is truffle and our server was like, “what’d you think?” and seemed surprised when we were like, “it’s tasty.” Apparently other tables did not like the truffle ice cream. I forgot the menu said truffle ice cream so I was wondering what made it so earthy, but of course the husband remembered and reminded me. It goes really well with the cheesecake IMO but I guess it’s a bit of an acquired taste? I’m not even a big truffle fan. But the husband and I totally could have split a dessert instead of each having our own - it is super filling, especially after all those carbs we had!

I think it was a reasonable restaurant to go to, and I’d recommend it for like… a trendy date night if you’re already in the area? Food is good (I think Keith Pears was in the kitchen that night), and service was good except for the weirdness where our table was in the middle of a different server’s section so we got forgotten right at the end of our meal when we were trying to pay and clear out - which is not the worst time to be forgotten I guess. Decor is fun (and I do like the wall full of beckoning cats) but the lighting is dim, which is to be expected in this kind of a restaurant.

I will probably go back again next year (I want to try their duck 5 ways, since duck is one of my favourites!), but I don’t think it’ll be in regular rotation even though it’s so close by. I just have too many restaurants on my “to try” list!

The meal looks delicious. Thanks for sharing.

I looked up the 5 way duck prep-

AGED WHOLE DUCK 5 WAYS

Smoked king cole duck breast, duck leg confit, crispy duck wings, duck pot pie with house made dried tangerine marmalade, sour cherry hoisin, spring pancakes, cucumber, scallions.

I am curious how they age the duck… The duck pot pie seems intriguing with the marmalade and sour cherry hoisin.

Although I am only counting 4 ways from their description. Maybe some of the duck is to be eaten with the pancakes Beijing style…

Thank you for sharing. The crispy broccoli does look amazing, and if I’m guessing right, the leaf symbol on the menu means it’s vegetarian. I am intrigued by the truffle cheesecake. Many people don’t seem to enjoy savoury and sweet flavour combination. My recent experiments with flavour extracts made Mr Leny shudder … black truffle hazelnut and hazelnut gorgonzola lattes :joy:

Oh yeah, that only looks like 4 ways to me too. Now I’m even more curious… I will definitely report back whenever I return to try it.

I’m wondering if they dry age the whole duck, similar to this guide on Serious Eats. It’s something I’ve wanted to try doing myself for a while, but I can’t give up that much fridge space.

I do think the leaf means that it is vegetarian!

Black truffle hazelnut sounds pretty good to me, but I’m not sure about hazelnut gorgonzola hahaha.
