Paramount Cafe- Chinese Burgers in an Apartment Bldg. - Virginia

How fun! And delicious, of course. Nice work, Steve!

Okay, I checked it out and the experience of my friend and me was just as good as Steve’s at Paramount Cafe.

The north end of Crystal City now has a pretty large Chinese population and almost everyone who came in was speaking Chinese.

The online version of the menu is no more. Here is the current posted version.

But when I asked about the chicken feet and duck feet on the online menu, the young lady behind the counter went to get the owner (“better English”), who started pulling out other stuff they had that wasn’t on the menu, including a duck leg dish and a container of what our receipt described as “marinated dishes combo.”

The owner gave us a guided tour of the marinated dishes combo. I don’t remember everything that was in it, but it included quail eggs, lotus root, tofu skin, potato slices, wood ear mushrooms (or at least that’s what the owner called them, it wasn’t like any wood ear mushrooms I’ve had before), and other types of tofu. All of it had a real kick from Sichuan peppercorns. Served cold. Very interesting.

We added a bag of Lay’s Numb and Spicy Hot Pot Flavor chips, two delicious Chinese sausages on a stick ($3.79 each), and two of the wonderful chopped pork “burgers” on crispy flatbread and had ourselves a feast.

Another great discovery by Steve, and one that I suspect will have a continually evolving menu over time. Be sure to ask if they have anything that’s not on the menu.

And don’t forget to check out the nice selection of chips:

BTW, I had the cucumber potato chips and the hot and numbing variety, and both were surprisingly delicious. I rarely eat potato chips, but these were a bonus.

She told me that she prepares her dumplings fresh to order and would take about 30 minutes, so best to call ahead for them.

Thanks for the heads up about the marinated dishes combo. Good exploring! Next time I go I will show Lillian your post.

Lillian told us the same thing about the 30-minute wait time on the dumplings. That sounds like a good sign to me.

Any word on whether a family member’s musicianship (or lack of) accounts for the piano parked on the premises?
