The Oyster House on Sansom street is a Philadelphia institution, and we can rarely resist its siren call for a light & reliably delicious brunch or lunch. The space is bright, low-key & unpretentious, with a selection of beautiful oyster plates mounted along the walls.
After a little over 2 hours in the car coming from NYC, it felt good to stretch out at the bar & watch the shuckers do their job. And boy, do they ever: the most perfectly shucked oysters I’ve had anywhere — not a single piece of shell, the muscle properly cut so the delicious mollusk slips straight into your gullet, liquor and all, with just a slight tilt of the shell
There’s always 6 varieties on offer (so, not nearly as many as at GCOB), and we’ve rarely had a repeat over the years.
We split a dozen (2 of each), plus a bowl of NE clam chowdah each. The AK oysters were absolute perfection.
A PA Pilsner to warsh it all down
