Overnight layover in beijing

Hi, we will be arriving about 8pm and leaving early next morning. Is it worth leaving the airport? We’ll be looking for a bite to eat and a wander around. How hard is it to get to central Beijing from the airport and should we try to focus on one area. Thanks for any advice.

We checked up. Apparently if you are in transit and are staying in China less than 24hrs, no visa requirement.

Getting from Beijing airport to the city should take about 40 minutes (good traffic) to 1 hour (if the roads are busy). It costs about RMB100 (US$15) per way.

Go to Sanlitun if you want to experience a bit of Beijing’s nightlife.

I would have recommended the bars/eateries in Houhai, but weather in Beijing is still pretty cold at the moment. That area’s real nice in the summer.

Good advice. Our experience is that the ride returning to the airport is better arranged at a major hotel.

Restaurants outside Beijing Capital Airport tend to be in pretty “isolated” locations, e.g. one Argentine steakhouse whose name escapes me at the moment. btw, Argentine steaks is one of the food trends in Beijing right now.

It’s better that you go to Sanlitun where there are more choices and the places there open late.
