There is a notice in Ball Square, Somerville from poundhouseboston.com that a Vietnamese Coffee Shop is opening soon. It’s right next to Taco Party and True Grounds.

Excellent!

Pound House Coffee will be at 703 Broadway in Somerville, three doors down from Taco Party. I think that there was a dry cleaning establishment there in the recent past.

Nowon looks to be open now in the Seaport (across from Levain bakery). A Korean gastropub place - have never tried the NYC locations. Very excited to try this, but its website doesn’t show a local menu. Seems geared towards online delivery ordering, but you can poke around the NYC locations to get a sense of their menu.

i was in ball square yesterday and taco party was closed and from what i can see, they closed without cleaning up —- trash still on the counter.

Somenya is in its soft opening phase in Quincy right now. Address is 15 Beale St, so close to the corner of Hancock and Beale Streets in Wollaston.

Vietnamese coffee shop is very exciting! But I’m curious as to why they wouldn’t have used the True Grounds space right on the other side. Seems on the surface like it would be easier to repurpose a prior coffee shop as a coffee shop, than a prior dry cleaner… (Assuming equal rent and other stuff I guess - maybe the new space is smaller.)

because true grounds is still in business — was there sunday afternoon!

Even better for a takeover. You get everything in working order.

I plan to go to Ball Square Wine soon. I’ll check it out. So now there are two coffee shops right next to each other???

and why should true grounds be taken over? i’ve been going there since the day it opened in 2004. and yes, it’s not what it once was, but you really think it’s ready to go out of business?

lol! I was across the street at Avenue Pizza two weeks ago and the place looked abandoned. Maybe they need a new sign or something! Glad to hear it’s still in business; while I haven’t visited in a long time it’s always been one of my favorite places in the area and has a special place in my heart: One long ago summer I spent several hours a day there for a couple of months straight, while I was working on a large remote project. (Purchasing plenty of food and drinks along the way, to be clear. I didn’t camp for free.)

This does seem that it may oversaturate the area. But to be clear and avoid disappointment, the Vietnamese coffee shop is NOT open yet. Not sure on ETA. What we could really use is a fro-yo shop.

This is the same street where a dispute caused some staff from one breakfast place to open a new breakfast place literally right next door with, at least initially, the exact same menu. Both survived. So apparently oversaturation is NBD!

They will literally NOT be “right next to each other” - the Taco Party storefront, a chiropractor, and a flooring business will be between them.

And across the street are Ball Sq Cafe and Sound Bites, as well as Kelly’s Diner down the street a block so I suspect that there is a large demand for coffee and breakfast in the area. Time will tell.

I was kidding.

How I would love a fro yo shop! Not bubble tea! When I first came to Cambridge in 1973 (I’m that old), I was enchanted to discover a frozen yogurt place on Brattle St, I think it was. It was fantastic, and at a time when yogurt at the grocery store was barely available in my small North Carolina town.

Just got an email that Didrik’s in Belmont is closing. Currently 15%–60% off everything. Their Newton location closed a few years ago and I snagged a bunch of Duralex Picardie glassware.

Did they carry cookware and suchlike? They first opened on Concord Ave across Huron from Armando’s, possibly in the same location that once housed Beauty by Marie. Marie did the nuns from next door, and me. But that’s another story. Didrik’s then opened a very good kitchen goods store across the street from Hi-Rise. That was very useful to me. When the store(s) fled to the 'burbs I felt the loss of the kitchen store acutely.
