Oh yeah…![]()
OH NO! I love Ten Tables! It’s been around forever - Dave Punch started off there - I wonder if it’s still as good? Do you know why they’re closing?
ETA:
oh, thanks for reminding me that Cambridge Naturals has Rancho Gordo Beans! Dave’s Pasta does and so does The Mushroom Shop in Somerville. I do order directly from Rancho Gordo on occasion because it’s free shipping over a certain amount and the customer service is fantastic. Formaggio carries Rancho Gordo at a higher cost.
Mixed feelings. I finished high school in Ohio but grew up in Indiana, including a year on the Bloomington campus. I always rooted for Michigan because Woody Hayes was such a …. let’s just say unpleasant individual. Our neighbor played tuba in the OSU marching band and would play the OSU fight song on the front lawn of a neighbor who graduated from Michigan whenever OSU crushed Michigan in The Game. To give you a sense of the intensity of the rivalries, my Purdue friends are in mourning- they can’t celebrate IU’s success.
We made it here over the weekend, but were not impressed. It’s the same family who owns Dragon Pizza, which I quite like, and their sprout is in school with my sprouts. The owner also had a fairly public spat with the Barstool Sports jack@#$*, which I respect. However, they are not ready for prime time up at the Hollows. Many glitches with drinks and kitchen as far as ordering and timing, plates that didn’t really seem “finished” (ie, a perfectly nice piece of fried chicken, but no sauce whatsoever), and upcharges for alcohol that were a surprise on the bill. I don’t feel like going into more detail as I am always cheering for the locals, but this place needs some serious polishing before we’d go back.
Thanks for the report! We will definitely hold off for a while.
Darn it. Rudy’s has a special place in our hearts so we were excited about checking out the Hollows (although, admittedly, we were at PJ Ryan’s way more often back when we lived a few blocks down).
I did give a side-eye to the lack of veggie or pescatarian offerings on the opening menu. We shall bide our time and let them settle in. Thanks for the early report.
I lived a few blocks from PJ Ryans in East Arlington until we bought in East Somerville a lot further east on Broadway in 2002. Rudy’s and PF Ryans were hangouts long ago. Thanks from us as well for the report.
Finally found it. Difficult to spot because of the absence of ANY signage, which is apparently a deliberate decision. First time I walked by I thought it was a waiting room.
Pastry options were surprisingly limited – I wonder about the long term sustainability.
Further afield, I just found out that a beloved place for my family, Scales and Shells in Newport RI is having their last service on New Year’s Eve, so at least they’re going out with a bang. Sad.
We’re heading to Westchester NY for the holidays. I’m gonna try to shoehorn in one last visit on our way home from NY before they close.
No!!! I have been sending people there for decades. Huge loss.
50% off merch on their web site. Limited sizes available for wearables, but there’s other goodies. Feels like visiting the estate sale for a deceased friend.
Providence Journal reports the new owners plan a refresh. So there’s hope. But if they are selling off merch the name will likely be retired.
This is a place with many affectations, too many for my blood. I do go in there occasionally for one thing, and one thing alone – their plain pretzels which are quite good.
I, too, wonder about the business model, but I know nothing about these things. Across the street, the rather good FUPO closed within a year, but this place is hopping in the limited hours it deigns to be open.
A sort of closing and old news by now so tucking this in here…Jeff Lawrence founder of the Weekly Dig has died.
Did you look forward to the new issue, when you would open the orange or black newspaper box, grab a copy, and quickly move your hand out before the door slammed shut on it? I did. Wasn’t Marc Hurwitz one of the primary food writers? I miss having a free alt paper in town.
Sigh. I used to write music reviews for Weekly Dig, back in 2000-2002 or so. No clue who was writing food stuff back then; I couldn’t have cared less at the time. Good and much more innocent times, at least for me…
Cool! I’m sure I have read your work. Sad for the days of yore.
