Elephantine Bakery just opened a location in Fort Point / Seaport, at 332 Congress St. Their website is still Portsmouth, NH focused. The storefront is adorable - done in a beautiful French and classic European feel. I’m particularly excited because they also sell fresh some baked bread. Tried their scone with strawberries and butter, and it was delicious. All their other pastries look beautiful.

Limited hours in Boston - 8am to 2pm, closed Tuesdays.

I can confirm New City Microcreamery has opened their Arlington Center ice cream shop, in the former Abbott’s Frozen Custard location. I wish them well- challenging time of year for an ice cream opening!

Thanks for the intel. Spring Onion will do his best to keep them going through the winter months.

Not in New England.

I see guys in board shorts drinking iced coffees in the winter. So yeah. Ice cream shop opening up should be a piece of cake. With a scoop of French Vanilla alongside.

Yep when I came to Cambridge for college in 1973 from North Carolina, two of the many things that most impressed me besides the many bookstores (way back then) were the several languages I heard on the streets that I couldn’t identify (I came from high school French and Spanish) and the number of people eating ice cream on the street during a snowfall. I was deeply impressed. While wearing my suede open backed shoes and wondering why no one told me I’d need snow boots.

so decades later I came back and waiting for the bus with wet hair from the shower when it was 40 degrees or lower, and then went to get an iced triple espresso before I entered my office.
Ice Cream isn’t just for summer and neither is iced espresso. However Dunkin coffee of any kind, never ever.

Birds of Paradise at the Speedway in Brighton closes permanently tomorrow.

the things we do when we’re young and stupid.

back in the 70s, i remember waiting on a long — long — line at steve’s in davis square in subzero temps.

@tartandfit Bummer. Did you go there? That whole area has been on our to-do list but there are too many other things that take precedence.

The paper came off the windows at Hearth & Hug Bakery in Davis Square, in the former Q’s Nuts location and there were lights on and people inside last night. They appear almost ready to open! The website indicates they’re open, but that’s not true as of yesterday. I wish they would post a date! (Full disclosure: I live right around the corner and contributed to their Kickstarter campaign and am just dying to use my credits!)

Edit: the internets are listening to me. Creepy, but just popped up in my facebook:

Exciting news everyone! Hearth & Hug Bakery will be opening NEXT WEEK at 349 Highland Ave! We will be doing a soft opening on Wednesday 11/5 (just a half day to give staff a bit of a warmup!) and our Grand Opening will be Saturday, 11/8 at 8am! We’ll have coffee, pastries, desserts, breakfast, lunch and more. We can’t wait to see you all there!

I never made it. Both of his Brookline restaurants (now down to 1) were within walking distance, but I haven’t been to Blossom Bar/Sichuan Garden in a couple of years at least. Unrelated, Fugyaku in Coolidge Corner is also closing.

I totally missed that Birds of Paradise was owned by Ran Duan. I’m sure some GBA Onions must have read about the awful storyawful story about him and the yet-unsolved death of a young woman of his acquaintance.

Will be interested in your review for sure. I lived just a couple of doors down from there for several years before moving out to the deeper 'burbs. (That location was a convenience store at the time.) It’s great to go back and see that so much more interesting stuff has moved in…and I always feel like I left the party a bit too early.

Made a Formaggio Kitchen run this morning. I looked for the Iggy’s Cafe that was supposed to be nearby but found an empty storefront where I think it was located. Did I miss it completely?

Imagine

Literally right next to Formaggio, @ the corner of Huron and Gurney

Link in case anyone else couldn’t quite grok what you were saying. (At first I read “Imagine” as sarcastic and couldn’t understand what the occasion was…)

It often looks empty, when it isn’t open.
