Openings/Closings, Greater Boston and New England, Q1, 2026

In Waltham news - it appears we are getting a new taco place opening on Main street in the old Gustavos location (663 Main Street across from City Hall/Town Square). Soft opening this weekend if I read the sign correctly while driving by . . .

Monarca Taqueria - guess they have an existing location in Milford. And I believe their liquor license was approved last year sometime.

Will try to check it out (can’t this weekend - Superbowl, Olympics . . .just too much going on)

Spoke Wine Bar (Davis Sq, Somerville, MA) just announced on IG that they have purchased the former True Bistro location in nearby Teele Sq and plan to open a restaurant named Liars there.

(I have been seeing renovation activity at that location for the last couple of months so now I know what to expect!)

Fuful Bakery is now open in downtown Boston at 274 Franklin St. It’s an Asian-French bakery, so a lot of more classic Asian flavors like sesame, yuzu, lychee. I tried a few things last week and they were quite good, but on the expensive side. Good sized croissants that are in the $7-8 range. They have these beautiful fruit flavored cakes that are really delicious, particularly their apple one.

Great news! I can’t wait to see what they can do with a bigger space. The food that came out of the their closet-sized kitchen and a hot plate never ceased to amaze me. Plus, the new digs will have a gorgeous vista out to the famous Teele Square Pit, which celebrated its 14th birthday last fall.

The included snippet states that there used to be a laundromat where the Teele Pit is but my recollection is that it was a dry cleaners - which is why it was so contaminated

Dry cleaners are notorious for contamination. There was one in Medford Sq years ago on Forest St. It burned down and rather than rebuild on the site they just filled in the hole and turned it into a surface parking lot for the Post Office

Not a restaurant but Boston Provisions Market will have a grand opening on March 2. It’s a partnership between Savenor’s and Wulf’s fish, and sells high quality meat and seafood. Was invited to a preview and a chance to purchase with a discount, and I’m really kicking myself for loading up at Costco’s for LNY. Not much freezer space left, and already had some stuff defrosting for meals.

They offered a tasting of 3 of their caviars at the preview (not a huge fan, but partook anyway). Ironically the one from China I liked the best for being balanced. The Belgian one had great taste, but was super briney and salty. The US one was from Idaho (?) and had a slight cheese note which was a bit weird. I probably would have enjoyed them all more on a slight piece of toast or biscuit.

Not a fan of caviar in general, or not a fan of these? Any idea on pricing? I don’t know of many places locally that sell caviar and the pricing is often very high compared to some online retailers, so I’m definitely interested in a new option if it’s decent.

Not a big fan of caviar overall, but I like them in small quantities in certain applications. Top a maki roll or a Japanese dish with a bit of caviar and I’ll enjoy them. I’m not interested though in eating a mouth or spoonful of caviar – just too salty for me, and I LOVE salt. It’s not the fishy taste, or the popping texture. I’m not sure why I’ve never cared for it much. I had to tell the lady scooping the sample yesterday “You don’t have to give me that much.”

Formaggio Kitchen

The space of the slightly old, yet lamented FUPO, now appears Japanese:

They say they open at 11 tomorrow. I expect to be there rubbing elbows with @kumquat, as in elbowing them out of the way, to see what they have to offer.

Oh great news! Thanks for the heads up - see you there soon, I’m sure!

This really could be exactly the take out option that we need near us.

I totally missed your other questions, so my bad. Everything on their seafood side is from Wulf’s fish and here’s their online shop pricing: https://wulfsfish.com/collections/caviar
I assume it will at least be similar, because most of the other seafood items seemed similar from what I recalled online prices were. I definitely sampled the CA white sturgeon on Weds, but I don’t see the Belgian one (salty) or the Idaho one (cheesy). Maybe that’s good news that they will offer more variety at the shop. The caviar they kept in the ice case, and not everything had a price label yet.

I have also seen caviar at Cardullo’s in Seaport, though they run expensive of course.

Thanks for the link! I’ll give it a shot at some point. I usually pay a bit more – around $60/oz – but for slightly higher end stuff than they seem to have on that list. Cardullo’s is definitely overpriced for just about everything but I always enjoy poking around in there.

Not open yet – when I sauntered by today. (That’s how you will be able to spot me – I’m the saunterer, but, I hasten to add, not simultaneously a loiterer; as the laws says “No person shall saunter and loiter in a street”.)

I’ve emailed them to ask what’s up.

A relatively new addition in Brookline. Can’t speak to it, but it’s another option. https://markyscaviar.com/markys-caviar-boston/

Super interesting, thanks! They’re one of the online retailers I sometimes use. Definitely quality, although their prices have crept up over the years.

Do their caviars give you good vibrations and sweet sensations though? Sorry, any Boston store named Marky’s is going to get that reaction. Place looks pretty cool that I would saunter by and visit too.

Cool that they own Huso, where one of the Top Chef winner works Would be awesome if they did want to bring a menu/restaurant to this area.

“Funky” and “caviar” are two words that I don’t want anywhere remotely near each other. YMMV!

I haven’t ever visited the Marky’s store in NY, nor have I heard of Huso, but the tasting menu on the web site looks really good. Might have to add that to the list for my next trip.

Wildgrain Bakehouse is open in Somerville, adjacent to Aeronaut Brewery. The owners have apparently been running a bake-from-frozen artesanal bread subscription delivery service for a few years, and have just now launched a walk-up store front. The Parsnipity crew biked over yesterday and partook of their sweet deal of 50% off all pastries for the last 30 minutes before 2pm closing. Did we eat one of everything remaining? Yup. Was my DC in a 2000 calorie deficit due to his morning exercise and exertions? Yup. Have you ever seen anyone eat 6 pastries on the spot? No, me neither. Anyways, I really enjoyed the gluten free chocolate chip cookie which they warmed up and absolutely hit the spot. The croissants, biscuits, other cookies and whatever else disappeared into the gaping maw of my DC’s mouth were proclaimed delicious. I highly recommend checking them out.

Sumi House is open and we tried it last night for takeout. We had 4-5 rolls, some nigiri, and some dumplings for the younger, non-sushi-obsessed cipollino. Online ordering was straightforward and easy.

Everything was good to very good. The fish was fresh and flavorful (in a good way!) and none of the rolls were drowning in sauce (a personal pet peeve). The older kiddo says that this is now his “second favorite Boston sushi spot,” behind only Cafe Sushi. (Should any of you find yourselves on the southcoast, Turks in Mattapoisett is his - and our - overall #1.)

We’ll certainly order again soon - a great addition to the hood.
