Openings and Closings of Restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area

We don’t really have thread to capture the restaurant opening and closures in the Bay Area

Some recent openings:

RT Bistro (Hayes Valley, from the people behind Rich Table)

Vicinity (Los Gatos, tasting menu restaurant from the folks of Tasting House)

Sangria & Salt (Mission, in the old Cha Cha Cha place)

Zaytinya (Palo Alto, Jose Andres associated place with Mediterranean focus)

One recent closing;

Vespucchi (San Mateo , quite popular Italian - bit surprised by it)

Also from 2025:

Closures:

  • A Slice Of NY in Sunnyvale. Apparently there is a San Jose location. Haven’t been there yet, but hope it’s as good as the Sunnyvale one was.

  • Jersey City Joe’s in San Carlos.

I went there several times in August during normal hours, and they were closed. Finally a few weeks later, someone on the internet reported they had closed.

There is a Half Moon Bay location. Haven’t been there yet. Hopefully it’s as good.

Can someone confirm whether Shari’s in San Bruno is still in business? I’ve tried calling them several times the past two months. After I navigate the phone menu to speak to someone, it goes straight to voice mail.

Paxti’s in Dublin closed in August 2025. Now, the only Paxti’s location is in San Francisco.

There used to be 6 or 7 of them, several years ago.

I was there in July, business looked great.

But in May, there was one day where it was weird. Got there at 8pm. They close at 9. Place was dark, except for a worker standing at the door. Door was locked and she waved at us to leave.

I had never been turned away, at 8pm or even 8:20pm, before.

Apparently The Sherwood Bar and Cocktail in West Portal has closed (was thinking on going there as they had some good cocktails in a nice laid back ambiance)

A few interesting looking recent opening:

  • The Wild Fox (japanese-inspired cafe in FiDi)
  • Equal Parts (New American restaurant in North Beach)
  • Parachute Bakery (cafe/patisserie in the Ferry Building)
  • Sohn (korean breakfast/lunch place in the Dogpatch)
  • The Green Heron (cocktail bar in Haight Ashbury)
  • Bar Orso (cocktail bar from the people behind Merchant Roots)
  • Food Folk (interesting looking food shop on Clement in Inner Richmond)

And one closure with Ofena in Lakeside

East Bay Nosh (Oaklandside/Berkeleyside) keeps a running list of recent openings and closings in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Damn high end Filipino food is having a moment in San Francisco.
We had our office party at Abaca - I thought it was excellent and plan to go back on my own dime.

What was the stuff you liked best?

The Wild Fox does have very good coffee. I need to go back when I’m not rushing off to work so that I can have their coffee flight.

Parachute is also excellent.

I really need to go–it’s just down the block from my office.

Well that’s hard to say because it was set up sort of appetizer/serve yourself style, so we weren’t ordering off the menu. Also, it was the “afterparty”, at which point I was drinking double bourbons on the rocks, which might have affected my memory.

@honkman , what do you think about a similar thread for discontinued grocery items? I don’t know if it would go in the cooking thread (because it’s about ingredients), or somewhere else.

Are you looking for SF Bay area specific grocery items or anywhere. If it is anywhere you could start it in “Cooking” thread

That is a good point. It can be either, at times. For today, I’ll do cooking forum. Another day when it’s more specific to local grocery markets and butchers, then this forum.

This spot just opened at the edge of SF Chinatown - I tried their mixed grilled plate to-go, and everything was executed perfectly:

They also have a $49 turkish breakfast for 2.
