Call me a futilitarian. The world’s human population quadrupled over the last century, and the graph gets ever steeper. Unless the growth ceases (ideally, the total population would decrease, but if that happens, it won’t be intentional on our part), I believe that the pressure on production to feed our increasing billions of mouths will preclude system-wide, affordable improvements in humane treatment of livestock and poultry. Unless religious and societal norms change, to encourage birth control and limiting family size, at some point, habitat destruction and environmental degradation will kill off most of humanity.
