Ontario strawberries in the store

I was looking forward to trying the first of the Ontario strawberries for the season. What a disappointment. Watery, almost flavourless. They looked nice, but the greenhouse berries over the winter put them to shame. Sigh.

I noticed they have been like that for a few years now. Prefer getting Quebec ones from say, Yummy Market instead!

That’s too bad. I wonder if the weather conditions this spring were a factor (l thought they need a lot of sunlight and it was a fairly wet spring).

@DrJohn You’re right. We need more sun and heat for the berries to get some flavour.

@THECHARLES A drive to Yummy Market for Quebec strawberries would make for some expensive strawberries. On the other hand, if I combined it with a trip to Duo…

Ah Ha!! Darn good idea and combo, Jammy!!..May be, whilst you are at it, some excellent Cantonese BBQ/Roasted meat from Richlane Plaza up the road on Leslie then hop across to Taro fish & seafood for some fresh sushi and sashimi?! Ha!!..or may be just stay and make a food-crawl around Richmond Hill/Markham :yum: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It varies a lot, depending on the rain and heat units the week they were picked.

I don’t buy them at Metro, Sobeys, Superstore, Loblaws or No Frills.

My indie grocery store and the greengrocers at the market in London carry berries from 3 local strawberry farms in the London area.

In Toronto, the produce shops tend to have good berries at good prices. The ones on Bloor near Palmerston carry Quebec strawberries from Ile d’Orleans once they’re in season, as well as Ontario berries.

Are there any independent Italian- run grocery stores near where you live? They tend to sell better local produce in the summer, in my experience.

I’m heading towards Leamington tomorrow and I’m going to stock up on produce. The berries from closer to Leamington get more heat units than the Norfolk county berries.
