Ongoing Thai Festival in Manassas

This is a vibrant street market which takes place every other Sunday on the big lawn in front of the Manassas Museum. Many vendors selling a very good variety of foods, all with very professional looking setups. Four double-sided rows of vendors plus a fifth single-sided row.

For comparison, there is much more variety here than the really big annual festival in Wheaton, though it’s been years since I was there.

This festival did not get crowded and it was easy to order. There are four or so picnic tables around. In the morning there was no problem sitting down at one. Some folks brought their own blankets and chairs. We got there when it opened, at 10am. It goes until 5pm, so maybe the crowd grows after noon.

It was a great success for us. We got five dishes:
Mussel omelette, sausage wrapped in seaweed, corn cake with basil, pork noodle soup, and sour sausage. Also got a huge matcha tea drink with half n half added on top.

We loved it all! Not cheap, though. For some of the food you just need to be careful. We didn’t want a whole bag of deep fried plantain or sweet potato, so we passed.

Next one is August 18th. And it continues on through the first week of December!

Returned to the Thai Festival with even better success this time. We repeated the corn basil dish as well as the mussel omelette.

New for us was the ‘bouncy’ dumplings which are pork paste around a shrimp wrapped in bead curd skin. Fun and juicy.

Next up was a steamed bun stuffed with red bbq-style pork sausage. Also surprisingly juicy.

This was followed by a prepared-to-order bamboo salad and a Thai sausage that was herbal and I think had some bean thread in it. A tad dry, but good, light flavor.

I felt that none of these could be easily found in a restaurant, so it’s possible to truly take advantage of the ‘street food’ aspect of the festival.

Two items that intrigued me I haven’t tried are a pickled fish and a very herbal and chili infused pork dish with a clingy yellow sludge. Not sure what it’s called as there was no sign for it.

Good news is that there are two dates in October and two in November left to the season:
