I filed a bug report with the software vendor. This is not an HO-specific issue. I tested New York Times and Washington Post links on their own site and they have the same Onebox issues.

Any updates in the meantime? The issue persists.
New York Times and Washington Post changed their paywall structure earlier in the year.
With that change, the onebox functionality no longer can parses the links the same as before. The devs indicated that while there is information visually to create a nice onebox link, often times the sites do not make the same information available to onebox robots. So the devs said that they welcome the code improvement from the community but wouldn’t take on the change themselves.

I just posted this, with a NYT gift link, and after a minute or so the onebox popped up in the preview and posted fine.
And obviously here, as well.
