Great stuff. I’d forgotten about Child’s.
And Howard Johnson’s (the fried clam strips, Sundaes), Waldorf Astoria Hotel (Waldorf salad), the Automat.
My mother took me to Woolworth’s on 34th Street in New York. I miss their Club sandwiches. You could order a banana split, and pick a balloon. Every balloon had a small scrap of paper inside with a price ranging from 1 - 39 cents. They popped the balloon, and whatever price was inside, was what you paid for your banana split. They sold soft-serve ice cream in a tall glass with your choice of chocolate or strawberry syrup, and apple pie with a cheddar cheese pie crust. Delish. I have a receipe for their lemon ice box pie.
I went for the very cheddar cheesy grilled sandwiches. And I remember those balloons very well.
This is one of my all time favorite movie scenes, the kitchen scene from the Copa in the picture Goodfellas.
Not old, but I did mention pricing in my original post. Talk about pretentious - menu wise. As of Tuesday there were still 2 out of 3 left. Wonder if they sold out.
Great read.
