Okay Eats NYC 2025

I’ve been threatening to start this thread for a while. Here’s where to report on the not so hot, the decent but flawed, the might improve with time.

From the folks who brought you Dame, one of my favorite restaurants, Crevette, a seafood place with a really, really nice menu. And uneven food. I went with five others, so we got to try a lot. Prices are on the high side, and portions are on the skimpy side, never a good sign. It’s also one of those places where the server will tell you to order five appetizers and two entrees per person. (I am exaggerating - but only slightly - for effect.)

Red shrimp carpaccio. I think in my head this was ceviche. I wasn’t crazy about the ground-up-ness of it, but that’s carpaccio for you.

Sicilian sashimi was fine. I question the use of oil, but I guess that’s the Sicilian part.

Bluefin tuna with crispy potato. I resisted getting this, and it was easily one of the two best things we ate.

The other was this delicious seafood rice, with all kinds of things, prepared perfectly.

Foie gras, mushrooms, egg yolk. I ate the mushrooms, which were very intense, in a good way.

Peekytoe crab agnolotti, which I somehow failed to photograph, because because I was stunned by its majesty. Someone else stepped up.

Tortilla with morels. It’s an omelette. Even with the morels.

Deviled crab, which I absolutely insisted on getting, and which was mediocre. Just tasted like fry.

And three desserts: ice cream, rum (sorry - rhum) cake, and cheesecake. The rhum cake was very good, thie other two were fine.

The whole thing seemed a little cynical, somehow. But maybe it’s just not the right place for a large group, since nothing was really big enough to split properly.

sicilian sashimi = crudo which is dressed with oil and other things

I figured. I just didn’t think it worked very well.

I like the crudo we have had in sicily and elsewhere, but if you are expecting something lighter or different or if its been sitting around for a while or the fish is not so good - lots of reasons it might not work for you

You see how much oil is on there. It’s a little crazy.

thats what bread is for, on an Italian table though…

No bread on this table.

I had a Jersey Mike’s tuna sub today, probably my first time in there since before I stopped eating meat (I used to be a fan of their roast beef). It was EXTREMELY SLOPPY and not really good enough for me to return, although I did enjoy it. The tuna is practically soup. The bread gets soggy in five seconds. But it’s piled with shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, oil & vinegar, oregano and god knows what else, and I feel affection for a messy sandwich like that.

As you can see, I ate it on the bus, because I am a scofflaw.

why would you grab a sandwich from jersey mikes when any of our 10000 or so bodegas are going to be better?

Inquiring minds want to know.

  1. Nostalgia
  2. Curiosity - maybe it would be really good

I’ve had several occasions, on my frequent trips to Connecticut during the past eight-nine months, to grab a sandwich from Jersey Mike’s. My curiosity is now satisfied.

The Jersey Mike’s Chicken Salad sandwich is shockingly good and better than most of the bodegas around my office. Subway and Jersey Mike’s generally make much better sandwiches than any “deli” near my job. by far,

I’d seriously suggest you changing jobs to a place near a good sandwich making bodega. Priorities!

I’m shocked and dismayed by how hard it is to get a good sandwich near metro tech. Especially the delis that try to pass off turkey ham as actual ham without telling you. Oy.

to get totally off topic, when we lived in the heights and I worked in big tech, I badgered my manager for a consulting engagement with chase at metrotech. A week after we moved to northern westchester, he called and said “hey, great news, I got you a consulting engagement with chase, 5 minutes from where you live”

isn’t mile end fairly close? actually, probably expensive…

Definitely expensive and unfortunately never had a good meal from them. I know people swear by it, but I haven’t had the magic ticket. And, while they have a bunch of gimmicky sandwiches, not many options. Small Smoked Meat Sandwich is $21. For a civil servant that’s a prety expensive sandwich.

I hear you, I’ve mentioned to steve a bunch of times how fond I was of the cuban-chinese places that were behind a&s but I guess they’re long gone. other than that, it was food wasteland although the chase cafeteria was fine/meh.

I walk over to Lichee Nut on Montague street for a decent budget chinese meal-- been going since I was a kid and it hasn’t changed much. It’s not amazing, but consistent and they have a lunch meal that’s $10 still. Hard to find affordable options round here. 20 minutes round trip. Leaves just enough time to eat and catch my breath before jumping back into work.

Lichee Nut, I know thee well! if that’s in range, there must be other court st joints that are doable?

Piccola Cucina Casa in Boerum Hill. Pretty much a chain now with 8 locations including in Yellowstone for some reason, and starting to taste like one. Decent Tuna Tartare, Prosciutto. Tried 4 different pastas and none stood out. Some tasted pretty much the same, one oversalted. Table side Tiramisu (why) was one of the worst I ever had. Way too liquidy. Attractive room but way way too dark.
