Oceanside Seafood Dinner: Penang, Malaysia

Fabulous Crab on the deck soaking in the sights and sounds of the shoreline of the Indian Ocean!!

We hit Zai Seng Seafood Restaurant the day after CNY. No reservations, but arrived just early enough to snatch best corner table on the veranda, very nice!!!

Determined to FINALLY dig into the famous Mud Crab of S.E. Asia. Bins full of trussed up feisty crabs, we’re in the right place!

Menu prices are very reasonable!!! Off hand, I’d say menu items are about 50% the price of the same dish in Singapore. Zai Seng is not at all a fancy place, but their menu had more than enough exotic and tasty items for 3 ~ 4 more future visits.

Deep Fried Squid with Chili Sauce and Drunken Herbal Prawns made for a nice appetitizer and prelude to our seafood Mains.

.

Black Pepper Crab, the star of the evening. Gorgeous local crab in a full flavored Pepper sauce.

A very tasty platter of Seafood Fried Rice and Wok Fried Cabbage played nice with the spicy mains.

While we were feasting, we enjoyed watching some locals casting their fishing nets and harvesting the FOD. Totally reminded me of hanging in Hawaii, absolutely beautiful.

The restaurant was now packed with après-CNY diners. Many families and groups of friends enjoying the holiday and each other. The friendly table next to us were doing the traditional Yusheng Raw Fish Salad and having a great time with the ceremony.

A great dinner in a wonderful warm setting. We will be back. Soon!!!

Mmmm mud crab - that’s what we eat in India (well, in Mumbai anyway, haha). I hope they were meaty and sweet!

Setting and meal both look great!

I absolutely LOVE yee sang. You should’ve gotten a platter and toss it yourselves! I can eat a portion for 5 by myself! :joy:

This one’s from my family CNY dinner at Maple Palace:
On your marks, get set …

Go!

I’d mentioned yee sang in this 2024 article:

Way. To. Go!!!

The whole family joining together with serving chopsticks and putting a meal together. Great that you and yours get together for occasions.

Happy CNY!

NOW, you tell me.

We can probably handle a platter for 5 between the twix of us + dinner, of course.

Have loved the Shunde style Raw Fish Salad. Slivered fish on a platter with stuff (ginger, peanuts, green onions, etc…) tossed in oil and special sauce?

Learned that the Shunde area has been a historical culinary hotspot, forever. We’re in Foshun/Shunde end of March. Interesting food ahead.
