Ocean House Croton NY

I had dinner here a couple weekends back. They are now accepting same-day reservations but I recommend calling right when they start taking reservations to get the time you want. I called at 7 and got two seats at the bar for 7:30.

They expanded a little so they now have some patio seating and a little entry alcove with host station, but the main dining room is still fairly cramped. The bar could use a little TLC to make it a more enjoyable place to sit.

Service is friendly as always. I find the menu prices a bit high given the atmosphere. We shared their excellent clam chowder that is not thickened to the point of gloppiness as in many places and chock full of clams, plus a nondescript salad. Then I had the lobster roll-- can’t fault them on portion size and the lobster tasted reasonably fresh but absolutely no comparison to a fresh Maine lobster roll. (So spoiled after our trip there last summer!) My husband enjoyed his crab cakes but I found there to be a lot of filler and the crab was shredded instead of chunked like I like it. We skipped dessert-- never been crazy about their dessert options.

Overall a good meal but really not worth a drive to those of you further afield. I also should note that it is loud and not quiet/romantic as it may look from the outside. A man at the table next to ours got very upset at a group of 4 laughing loudly and stormed out of the restaurant leaving his wife behind. It was quite dramatic. I didn’t think they were being so loud but the noise does echo in such a small space so if you are looking for a quiet dinner this is not the spot!

Wow! Sounds like an interesting evening!

It was! The owner offered him a table outside but he was so furious he walked out.
